I have a soft spot for Nicky. He wanted a more traditional Russia, and he cared deeply for his people, even going so far as to individually handling things such as requests from his peasants for injustices and even for changes to their names. This of course was his downfall, he had an amazing memory and attention to detail but he had a poor grasp of the big picture. What he really needed was 20 more years of his father on the throne so that he could learn more from him.

His death and the execution of his family is one of the most disgusting moments in history. I hope in future his legacy will be looked on kinder than what it has been. The results of his wars were poor, but the intentions towards his people were always paternal and kind.

Also, evwn though they shouldn't have killed the Romanov family (and especially the staff who was taking care of the Romanovs), but Western powers helped the white army in the civil war, and if the Romanovs were alive, the Bolsheviks would have most likely lost.
