You're kinda right. French was the leading diplomatic language until the Treaty of Versailles after World War 1 in 1919. It was written in French and English. It was always seen as an educated mans language rather than a common tongue though.

The reason English grew so much before that is that we insisted that anyone trading with Britain knew English and we taught all those middle class / professional people the language. Think of Gandhi for example. Any Chinese traders, lawyers etc would have spoken English as well.

If I had to guess the most worldwide common language I would say it was Spanish simply because the Spanish empire insisted that every one in South American spoke Spanish. It's still the most widely spoken language in the world in terms of sheer numbers.
