We learn that at a young age too. Couple things though:

1) TV shows try dumbing down everything so that the average viewer can empathize with the characters. Like in procedural cop shows how they act like science is essentially like connecting with some divine power to give you omniscience.

2) American universities typically have some introductory classes for subjects like math which you can test out of so you can move on to something more substantive. Like a test that you seriously spend 30-60 minutes doing so you don't have to take the course. In those courses it also is routine to go over some of these more basic math equations like the quadratic formula within the first couple weeks/months, because many people need the refreshers to help remember what they may have forgotten over the summer break, plus you need the courses available for those that did poorly in the subject back in K-12.

Many state schools have to have low level math because they are required to give most residents a glance even if they don't have an adequate levels of math or English training .

At the school I went to they offer remedial courses for people who are just below standard. you need to finish in your first year or you get dropped.

We learned about quadratic equations in high shcool, I think. The students would be 16 years old there. Mostly it was simple statistics, vector math and derivatives / integrals until university. There we learned about linear algebra, statistical tests, differential equations etc. at bachelor's level. The master's included courses about partial differential equations, bayesian data analysis, machine learning and various courses about algorithms. This was in computer science. I guess the pace could be faster, but in the end we arrive at pretty much the same level. I wouldn't be too worried if americans aren't solving differential equations in the elementary school.
