We're not as materialistic as the mainlanders. The newer generation of Japanese (millenials, gen z) are actually progressivley less materialistic. Less demand for cars, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. There was a materialism boom in the 80's because our country was always poor per person due to the lack of resources, everything from towels to woodwork was reused over and over back in the day... It's not so simple with Japan, as their problems are with culture. The government is literally begging employees to take vacation and maternity leave, but they don't because it would imply a lack of 'dedication' to the company.
It's horrid, but also a natural outgrowth of circumstances in Japan. I would much rather change the demographic problem (overpopulation) than try to engineer social change--as that could deprive the Japanese of their identity, should they ever open the floodgates to shitskins. Toying with cultural values is a dangerous can of worms.
