If you're doing this cause you wanna see combat then make sure you get an x-ray contract or at the very least go in as infantry. If you don't you'll regret it.

Anything else is gonna suck. You'll end up doing somthing 4x worse than your current job and make significantly less.

It sucks for the most part but in the end its worth it. It builds confidence and shows you how far your body and mind can be pushed. You won't know the real you until you're starving, freezing and sleep deprived.

Being an infantryman is something you can always take pride in and you'll have a skillset that the vast majority of the country will never have. This is extremely helpful when the racewar kicks off. You won't make a shit load of money but you'll get that GI Bill. I used mine to learn to fly helicopters AND go to school. pretty sweet deal.

I used to work with the happiest, most fun loving guy ever who recently came back for his week leave after marine boot camp. He was broken, looked like a skeleton, very quite and was depressed because he wanted to "just work on tanks or hummers or whatever at a base somewhere." He was told by his recruiter that is what he would be doing and when he got back from boot camp they changed his mos as some truck driver in combat zones. There was a moment all of us at work were trying to support him and let him know how proud we were to see him in his dress blues and he replied by looking up at the sky and saying "I'm going to die by a fucking ied." None of us knew what to say.

I guess the point of all this is for a lot of you guys to really fucking consider the sacrifices you WILL be making. I was going to join years ago but decided against it because of depression and just not being the greatest team player. What the recruiters promise and what's delivered don't match. Further, because most potential enlistees don't know the MOS system they'll say something like, "I want to work in technology." The recruiter will spin a tale of some occupation that's basically secretarial that's "technology" because almost everything uses IT.

You need to know specifically what MOS's you want and you need to know you have the ASVAB score to qualify, so take practice tests. Also, if you have a bad financial history it's unlikely you'll get a clearance, and then it's shitty jobs such as field service, truck driving, dfac.

No. At most, join the National Guard as infantry if you really want to play soldier & get a taste of what it's like. And if war breaks out, you'll be called up. But don't give up a comfy civilian job just because you want to LARP call of duty every now & then. Active duty, no matter your MOS, is not eventful. You're in garrison most of the time, and it fucking sucks. When you do go to the field, you're there for a month and it sucks even more & you're never actually doing what you were trained to do until you deploy (if you're combat arms). If you're Guard, you are basically part time and you don't deal with the garrison bullshit because whenever you have drill you need to train. But it's still not worth it imo, at least not for you.

Army SOF soldier here: don't do it. If you want to get your adventure rocks off, take up rock climbing, go hike in Alaska or something. The military was at once the best and worst thing I did with my life. I had 9 deployments (rockbox+western Africa) with a few TDYs thrown in. Imagine the worst of stuffy corporate life mixed with general government incompetence with high school drama sprinkled on top. That's your life when you're not deployed. I'm almost convinced that the oppressive awfulness of garrison life is designed intentionally to make soldiers prefer the field or deployment.

Advancement is ass in most all jobs and based around stuff that doesn't really matter to your job (protip: be able to score at least 70 (ideally 80 or 90, not much point in more than that because you'll lose score in basic above that point) in every APFT event if you decide to go in BEFORE you leave for basic. Your life will be a breeze pt wise). Everyone above you and around you will be idiots, except for the one other guy who isn't and he's weird as fuck. You'll have problems relating to civvies when you finally are allowed to interact with them again...even after just IET. The longer you're in the worse it gets.

Deployments suck but are better than getting yelled at for stupid shit in garrison (no matter how strike you are, a bored Top will find something to yell about at some point), and by better I mean literally the most boring thing you can fucking imagine the vast, vast majority of the time (or the entire time if you're like most who deploy these days) punctuated by a handful of pants shitting terror moments (training will get you through combat, but it doesn't do shit for helping you keep it together after a firefight ends, that comes with time though).

There were some great memories made, don't get me wrong, but it's shit, I dunno man. I just wouldn't advise it.

I enlisted after a few years of college, and boy did I come to appreciate everything civie life had to offer once I got stuck in some backwater garrison with a bunch of mouthbreathing retards tasked with picking up trash and cigarette butts and doing yard work because I didn't fucking deploy for my entire goddamn enlistment. Yeah, I was the weird guy. I was weird because at 22 I didn't want to get stomach pump drunk every weekend like the other junior enlisted and bang disgusting roastie townies. I just wanted to be left alone to do my own thing and not get a call from one of my so-called "battle buddies" who decided to fuck off to Tybee Beach to get shitfaced and total his car.
