I think most of the ruling Norks are sincerely nationalistic. They honestly think it's better for their people to be starving than to join the global community and be corrupted. They're extremely militaristic and have planned to be, along with other exemplars of North Korean loyalty and virtue, personally safe and comfortable during and after a nuclear war, and emerge afterward like new Adams with their Eve harems.
