To make sure that one lopsided state doesn't choose the President. Outside of California, it was a Trump landslide. This protects the smaller and more balanced states.

The point is meaningless anyways. If it was about the popular vote. Then Trump would go full-Texas pandering. Hillary was stupid to have a campaign that appealed BIG TIME to California but to few outside. And that is a good reason why she deserved to lose.
