I don't buy this for a second. You hear about how high unemployment is in European countries and you have the freedom to move through each country, I don't see how they can have a shortage of workers. Spain has an unemployment of 21% (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_in_Europe_by_unemployment_rate), and I would have to guess most of those people are just as qualified for jobs as inmates. I don't know what the wage situation in Europe is like, but this idea just smells like a bunch of penny pinching jewbags trying to save a buck.

I have been jobless and did not take any gov handouts. I worked on start-up ideas until I got a job and lived off of savings.

Just saying, we already do that. It's just that corrections departments try to keep the work as close to self-sustaining as possible instead of branching out into the market. For example, in the state department I work for all of the uniforms, furniture, mattresses, cleaning checmicals, food etc. that we use is made by inmates in state run factories across the state.
