There was nothing exceptionally wrong with the average Italian soldier or NCO. They fought as hard as any other within their limited capacity.

The problem was their commissioned officers. They were led, from the mid-level up, by idiots. The French army suffered from the same problems.

And in ww2 they got screwed with outdated tech (funny enough because italy decided to modernize their ww1 era army several years before the other european powers did) and incompetent generals. Italian troops did miracles when under proper command (like under rommel in africa).

the Italians are cowards even now. There was a controversy a few years involving the Italian army in Afghanistan. The Italians were given a zone to protect, and they secured it by PAYING the Taliban not to attack them. The zone was transferred over to British forces and the Italians told them "yeah the zone is clear of Taliban", and not too long after the Taliban ambushed the unsuspecting British and killed a bunch of guys.

Austria-Hungary was defeated by Italy in WWI. Russia was knocked out of the war, we finished the job and pushed well into Austrian territory. Horrific casualties were due to fighting in the worst possible terrain for trench warfare, mountains.

In WWII we simply shouldn't have fought. Our industrialization wasn't yet up to par with that of our major opponents, and no matter how small and weak our minor opponents were we always exhausted our logistical abilities simply for sheer lack of resources.
