Pence is not a retard. Any insurgent campaign against incumbent president is doomed to fail. Even if he would secure the primaries, sizeable portion of the base would be pretty buttmad and would vote for Trump who would run as independent.

Basically the democrat candidate wrecks Trump in 2020 if he does not turn his presidency into something other than trainwreck (and let's hope he does) and in 2024 we'll get republican again.
