There's no need for guns to protect against wildlife unless you're in croc infested areas, that's just a meme.

You CAN own an AR-15 and similar semi-auto rifles however it you must be a primary producer or employed on a rural property and have it for the sole purpose of feral pest management. Its still expensive as all fuck, is really hard to get approved for and if you stop needing it for work you have to surrender it.

Bolt actions arent hard to get but again you need it for primary production or sports shooting purposes. It just sucks that we don't have a right to bare arms but need a "genuine reason".

So the moral of the story is..... practice?

A shotgun has more recoil. If they miss, then their follow up shots will take much longer than a semi auto AR with basically no recoil.
A shotgun also will have limited spread at HD ranges. You still have to aim. Definitely easier to use than a handgun, especially if you don't have a lot of time to learn to shoot effectively, but you still need to practice with whatever firearm you wind up with.
