My dad was in for 20+ years as a C-130 pilot. What jobs in the CG would you be applying for? Would you be enlisting or going in as an officer? Generally speaking, the Coast Guard provides better quality standards of living to all of the other branches, except the Air Force. Someone is also likely to post "puddle pirates" at some point in this thread.

Enlisting. I wish I could go in as an officer but I only have an associates degree, I hate math and my grades are terrible in high school and college.
I was thinking about being a Boatswain's Mate or a Damage control man. I want to be a Boatswain's mate in order to learn leadership skills, save lives and go on adventures. I want to be a damage control man to learn a variety of skills and to have the best time possible. But I want a job that will pay well in the civilian world once I get out. AKA I want skills that are translatable to civilian life. What do you suggest?

I'm definitely not an expert, and you'd probably be better off talking to a recruiter, even though they will tell you anything to get you to join. I do know that you will definitely get to travel and go on adventures as a Boatswain's Mate. I believe that's what my dad started out as. He originally enlisted, served for a few years, got accepted to OCS, and then became a pilot. He's told me several stories about things he used to do when he was out at sea and some exciting experiences he's had. Depending on where you get stationed, you might get to catch and deport some illegals trying to sneak into the US, too. All in all I'd say if it's something you think you would enjoy, go for. There is nobility in serving your country, no matter what branch. A lot of the people who shit on the Coast Guard are ignorant about what they actually do. They're pretty fucking badass.

Boatswain's Mate - you'll be driving boats and using binoculars on the bridge
Culinary Specialist - a fucking cook, everyone will rate your job daily
Damage Controlman - you'll be welding and literary messing with shit pipes on a ship
Electrician's Mate - changing lightbulbs and chasing grounds, best engineering job
Electronics Technician - don't know what these fuckers do, they are in a dark tactical room all day
Gunner's Mate - idiots with guns, you are the gun expert, hooray!
Health Services Technician - worst medics in service, get used to blood and teach how to do a fucking tourniquet
Information System Technician - what i should have done, just be in a computer all day
Machinery Technician - diesel mechanics, possibly the shittiest job in an old ship
Marine Science Technician - only great if you do armed boarding, most likely you'll be inspecting container ships or facilities with piers
Operations Specialist - communications and secret stuff
Storekeeper - laziest job in the coast guard, you do inventory and order shit
Yeoman - ahh, the glorified secretary!

I worked with a retired Coastie. First five years suck, no rank and getting shit jobs. Second five years fun, shooting drug runner boats and rescue swimming. Last ten years sitting in office bored as fuck.
