I have been through part of Transnistria. It's a fucking run down place. My family friend said he often would give out an American dollar or cigarettes as the guards often want shit.
When going through it to Moldova you have a ticket with a time on it. From the Ukrainian border you are given around 25 minutes to cross the Transnistria territory. If you take too long on the road, you will be questioned about what you were getting up to there.
I got in a bit of trouble because I was walking around one of the check points taking pictures of shit and a guard made me delete them. It wasn't too tense there though, there weren't even magazines in their AKs.
