I was a hermit for about 4 years before getting married.

Just focused on work, asked for over time to stay out of trouble. Got into gaming and anime since you can do that anytime.

Have you ever gone to a big cemetery and analyzed which graves had the most amount of care and attention and which hadn't?

Here in Brazil we mostly bury our dead above ground, se we make little shelves where we can put candles and flowers and shit, and usually the graves of men age 18 upwards are the ones without any candles. The women are always full of flowers and candles in their graves.

A lot of the male graves also have child pictures in them even though the person who died is clearly older. Probably because he was a loner and the family couldn't find a photo of him as an adult, so they took whatever they could find.

This is how I realized how many people died alone and miserable, and how most of these losers are men.

Thats what just happened to me. Turns out all those friends I had will never call me no matter what and I have to always be the one to reach out and make shit happen. It's just exhausting after a while when you realize just how disposable in others lives you are. I've never felt lonely. As a kid I couldn't really rely on anyone so I learned how to do math, how to ride a bicycle and how to write all by myself when I was maybe 6. It's not much of an accomplishment but that coupled with the fact that my brothers didn't have to go through the same shit influenced my thought process a lot. I still haven't got rid of the feeling that I can't rely on anyone's help and as a result I try to stay as far away from people as possible while also living a "normal" life.

I'm Lonely because I'm not interested in keeping friends. It was incredibly convenient in Elementary/Middle/Highschools because I was stuck with those fuckers every damn day, so bonding was easier, no real effort was required. But now in college at 21, I've made many friends and added them on social media but actually putting in the effort to contact them and keep the dialogue going is to much work. I used to think that no one smiled for pictures back in the olden days because they were more conservative, serious, focused ect. Then I got into art and photography. Turns out painters can more easily paint a face that stays steady and a solemn face is easier to hold steady for the person modeling. Old photographs capture the person being soles as well because the shutter speed or lack of a shutter in the oldest cameras meant exposure to the film was so slow that a rock solid solemn face created a more in focus picture compared to a possibly twitchy blurry smiling face. Now I am left wondering what smiling faces actually looked like more then a hundred years ago or so.

When I was a teenager/early 20's I thought I would be living the dream if I was 30 with no responsibilities, my own place, and plenty of free time and disposable income. I can't speak for the article but I think it probably does. Is spending hours alone in front of a screen actually socialising? To what extent does your brain know the difference? Or your body, for that matter (if we can think of it in those terms)? I would wager it's actually quite a lot. You may have become accustomed to online interaction, but it's not like when you have a physical interaction, you come away from it thinking "that was exactly the same as sitting in front of a computer"

And this is just talking about friends, here, nevermind intimate relationships. If you're a kissless hugless virgin far into adulthood, you're definitely lonely, whether you've come to terms with it or not.

I mean obviously the bad part about a limited social life like this is you don't have anyone to fall back on when things get hard for you - that in itself is likely responsible for most of these deaths.

I'm a wizard and I have two good friends I've known since school. Our deputy head gave us a speech once in the final year saying "all your friends around you, soon enough you'll drift apart" or something to that effect, and all these years we've mocked that because we're still good friends.

Since New Year I've seen one of them twice and the other just once. All of a sudden it doesn't feel like it's holding together so well. The deputy head was right, it just took longer than expected. The one time the three of us were together a month ago they still both mocked him for that, "isn't it great he's still wrong!" while I sat there shocked they didn't notice the irony. It seemed like they were deluding themselves. Also they were drinking and I couldn't because I'm on medication, that might have had something to do with it.
