A black Roman soldier would be incredibly rare, and a general non existent (and I have never heard of a black Roman general) since the Roman Empire in Africa was in the northern (Mediterranean) region, almost entirely inhabited by Middle Eastern types (including many Semitic speakers, IE Carthage). Really dark black Romans should have been rare. But all of northern Africa and much off the middle east was Roman. There was much trade and travel all around the empire. To spot some Brits and Germanic in northern Africa or Syria was possible. Also the other way around.
