I know some people who did that when youtube changed their monetization strategy and drastically lowered the payouts for certain kind of content creators.
They just made their own website for their content.
Problem with that is that you already need a large following, no one will ever hear you if you start your own website with zero user base. So they would need a platform with an already established user base to first grow their audience before they branch out into their own project.

Which isn't a problem, because like I said, Patreon already exists. Just make a combination of that and youtube and offer some kind of contract to the content creators - they have to pay 50% of the traffic costs (to prevent low quality shit that turns no profit being spammed) but only have to fork over ~20-30% of what they take in through donations.

Obviously you'd first need the actual numbers and then tweak the %s to make it profitable, but I don't really see why such a service shouldn't be profitable. The only question is if you can manage to market it heavily enough to get it established.

What is word of mouth? Have some patience. Stop taking the comfortable "I'll let the major corporation do it all for me" option and get some independence. Do some leg work.

Where is the independence? Stop relying on others to do the work for you, especially others that don't want your to succeed.

Because like I said, the content creators would have to foot at least part of the traffic bill to ensure that people don't just upload useless crap that produces no profit all day long.
And people with enough clicks to create $300 of traffic costs per video would also already have a following large enough to offset that via donations.

I've been keeping a site going for a few years, yes. I've gotten all my 15k/month visitors though the links in my forum signature, and by word of mouth between visitors. I got kicked off NeoCities so I started hosting myself out of my own pocket, which isn't much at all since it's almost entirely written text, so I can pay for it almost with pocket change. I have no patreon and no donations, it's all paid for by myself. You may say "it's cheap because it's just text," but that's the fucking point.
