Hard to say. They filmed some of it in front of my apartment and we got notices saying that while filming, there will be swastikas hung up in public as part of the set. They also said that due to people being sensitive about it, they would cover them up with blankets etc whenever they weren't filming. Really good observations. I also noticed how some of the most important thematic moments occur when characters are watching old movies on TV. At first I wasn't really sure about it, but Frank's wife explicitly mentions how she's watching something on Turner Classic Movies. That made me think there was something more to it. Ray's dad talks about how great Kirk Douglas is while watching The Detective Story and mentions how in this day and age it's "no country for white men." The show was based on real figures from historical records and the two soldiers named Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo were awarded medals by Julius Ceaser for bravery.

I will help you out with what was going on in the story. One of the soldiers (Titus Pullo) was pretty much a beta (with an occasional alpha moment) with a lot of bad luck. He did a stupid thing in freeing the slave because he thought she would marry him.

Why did he want to get married? Because he wanted to emulate Lucius Vorenus and he didn't know how to do it.

Rome was an interesting place. Lots of people were killed for various reasons. If you looked up Roman history you would see lots of instances of purges of wealthy families by those who were jealous of what they had and wanted it.

(On a side note without exception those purges were started by the wives of powerful men. Women were the real troublemakers in Rome).

The show was entertaining. Especially if you knew the history because you would know the various players.

I am sorry you didn't like it. I thought it was an excellent show. I think if you read up on Roman History and then re-watched that show you would like it much better.

I am very interested in Roman history, and the parts in which it was ACTUALLY Roman were the best parts of the entire show (like the opening scene of the Battle of Alesia).
The vast majority of the series is a bunch of faggots sitting around talking about non-sense.
They literally cut off all the important battles, featuring them offscreen, and then just having some asshole explain what happened afterwards. The only battle that actually appeared onscreen was the battle between Augustus and the assassins, and that battle was completely historically inaccurate.
