Why do you believe in salvation by works and not by faith?

Salvation is by Grace. However, we must follow the commandments (i.e. sheep and the goats). James' letter in the Bible explains that we cannot be saved by faith alone.
>>
Do you agree with the tradition that priests not be able to take wives? Why is the western rite of the catholic church unique in this regard? I feel like it would both reduce the scandals of homosexual and pedophilic behavior, while also allowing the priests to give better sacramental advice to those who are considering the vocation of marriage.
>>
>Here's a quote from the linked post. I covered #1 yesterday.
I will try to cover the following topics over the next month or so:
1. How does one motivate oneself to DO something? I know what I want to do, but how do I actually DO it?
2. Education. Reading the right books and otherwise training the mind.
3. Physical health. How to lose weight, get strong and feel well (more of a /fit thing, I know)
4. Finances. Getting out of debt and being financially free.
5. Romance. How to find a worthy spouse who is loving, faithful and pure.
>Why can’t you talk about romance first?
Because you need to fix yourself first. I’m not going to teach you how to meet a woman, just to have her come over when you still need to CLEAN YOUR ROOM. To give you hope though, I will say this: my method for meeting the right woman, where to find her, etc. has proven to be pretty successful. I’ve actually married couples who have met and married following my method. However I should point out that this will work best if you are Catholic, or at least Christian. (It will also work best for Americans. Sorry).
>But what is your expertise in these areas? How does being a priest mean you know anything about fitness?
There are some areas where I will recommend resources more than anything. However, the key is to apply the method for motivation. There are countless books in the how-to area, but the real issue is motivation.

I actually think it could make the homosexual problem worse. Here's why: We would most likely adopt the Orthodox model of married priests and celibate bishops. But all that would do for us (in the West with so much more openness to homosexuality) is push more homosexuals into the episcopacy where they would have even more power. As for the priesthood, I believe we would attract a lot of hacks. I know that celibacy is only a practice, but I believe it prevents more problems that it causes.

Father, I am sturggling getting back into my faith. (Baptized Catholic, Catholic school, fell out of faith with teen years + internet)

I've realized most things we do are just toil and distraction from becoming close to God, but I am having a hard time throwing these things aside to further my relationship with him.

I am in an extremely stressful major in University, and all of my ways of coping are horrible.

Substance abuse (just caffiene, but it's still a reliance)
Alcoholism (drunk most weekends and tough week nights)
Excessive masturbation(were talking 40x a week)
Casual sex(when the wants aren't enough)
Video games(I know these aren't inherently bad, but they do bring out an overly competitive and evil side of me)

I do all these things as a way to get by. I k ow the easy way to stop is just to tell me to stop, but you don't tell a meth addict to just stop doing meth, im sure you get it.

My friend has been guiding me (he's some Protestant thinker in the states) and has me reading Tim Keller's "A reason for God" as a starting point of rekindling my faith. Based on all I have told you here, do you have any other input for me on the start of my journey?

Thanks for all the insight in this thread. It's why I still come here.

I heard an interpretation that it's more of a sign that there is no faith. As in, if you have true faith, you will naturally have good works and good works strengthen your faith.

Father, I'm a catholic, but have become disenchanted with the concept of 'afterlife'. I'd like to make the most out of this life on earth, because I think that's all there is. (Recently started praying directly to the one-true God, the Universal Creator). Anyway, I'd like to sell my 'soul' to the 'devil' for wealth, power and fame, and wonder if you have any suggestions on how I could make the arrangement for this unholy contract. Thank you!

Please give me a quick run-down on the tangible and practical improvements (if any) to modern western society that catholicism offers. I don't care about proof of God's existence or whether the catholic God is interested and active in my personal life. Hello Father, I'm Catholic myself and find myself opting to teach myself instead of going to church because of fake pastors and priests.
So, I have a number of questions.
>First is about the corruption of the text.
Do you think the bible has been altered over the course of history? Of course, there will be errors from translation etc. but I'm talking about willful alterations. If so which one would you recommend as being the truest?
>Second about the Nicene Creed.
I don't think I've ever read in the bible where Jesus explicitly said to worship or pray to him or his mother. (Rosary etc.) Isn't this a form of idolatry?
Shouldn't we call on God instead?
Also, why did it take 325 years for them to form and enforce the idea that Christ is literally God? And why did the church then eradicate all texts and enforced their new law?
>Third is Jesus "eliminating the old law".
Jesus said he did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it, but a jot of ink shall fade till all is accomplished ( or something so).
As far as I know, we still have prophecies waiting to happen (Like the Damascus prophecy)
If this is the case and Jesus speaks the word of God, which absolute, then why do we have people breaking the statutes and commandments saying they are no longer relevant?
>>
>>136406924

If the homosexual refuses to repent, is he to be put to death?
Also, very related, are the laws of the Old Testament still in place? I know that Christ said he came to fulfil the laws, but not abolish. Surely this means that they are still in place? Do you also think it is a sign of immorality when people react with disgust towards Leviticus? Even when the laws don't apply to you, they are still okay in God's book, and therefore perfectly moral.

Catholicism has tended to be the protector and promoter of the great Western tradition. Even as secular schools were cutting out study of the Greeks and Romans (including Greek and Latin languages) the Catholic Church has more or less maintained this (though there are schools that are Catholic in name only). I still believe the best Western education can be obtained in a good Catholic school (e.g. Thomas Aquinas college in California).
GK Chesterton said that "tradition is the democracy of the dead." Though our Church has floundered a bit as of late, I believe we still have a great number of institutions which preserve our western heritage. Furthermore, the faith lived well and true makes for a person of great character, on the whole.

I saw the past Pope when he came here and i wen't from being skeptic about him to actually liking him. I dont know if its how the whole event was prepared or the anticipation, but there was something awe-inspiring about the man, even if he did not at his best health, he seemed in a way, touched by god.

But the new one is just really sketchy so far, and i wouldnt be surprised of he was some plant from some wanna-be reformer cult.

1. Whatever alterations have occurred (there has DEFINITELY been redactions, etc) have been part of the process of inspiration. We are not muslims who believe that God directly spoke the scriptures. The Christian scriptures are a cooperation between God and Man.
2. The bible makes clear that there are a great many other things that Jesus did and said that are not contained in the gospels. He left the apostles and their successors to pass down the fullness of the faith.
3. The entirety of the law is fulfilled in Jesus. In essence, by being a good Catholic one IS fulfilling the Law.
You should still go to Church, my friend. Think of it as getting on a lifeboat. Better to be with people you don't like than to drown outside of it. I know there are bad people in the Church, even priests. But we must be faithful to Christ. remember what he said about the "wheat and the tares."

Father why were all of Jesus's teachings corrupted by Paul, a Christian-hater, who never met jesus and who authored OVER half the texts selected by Constantine's Nicean council to comprise the new testament? Was it to establish a state-sponsored control religion based in death-cult values, ie. suffer in this world for a magical reward in the 'afterlife'? Would Jesus, a man who taught about the one-true God, be rolling in his grave if he knew he had been deified by Paul and Constantine, if he hadn't already rotted into organic molecules?

I'm having a crisis of faith. I wasn't raised religious, but recently I've been warming to the christian faith and I feel like my lack of religious conviction has been a huge hole in my life. And I'm finding it difficult to make the last step and declare to myself that I sincerely believe in the existence of god and in his promise to the world.

Where do I go from here, how do I find the right denomination for me? What's the best way to practice faith? How do I convince myself Christianity is the one true faith? I feel like I'm about 90% there but can't find the last 10%.
>>
>>136408082
1. I believe in science. The bible is a complicated mix of literal truth and allegory (and it's different for each book). The universe is around 13.8 billion years old. But God did create the world.
As for the things happening before the passing of the generation, this is true if we consider Christ's resurrection as ushering in the last age.

The priest is an intermediary to act in a way to keep you from committing the sins in the future. God absolves your sins, but to keep from sinning in the future the priest gives you Penance. This further helps ease your conscience by making you feel like you're working for that salvation, and not freeloading like a lazy protestant.
>>
Do you think racism is justified by the Bible, as in simply believing in different races existing. The verse everybody uses to justify not believing in race is "There is neither Jew nor Greek, man or woman", yet I think this was simply in the context of salvation and not day-to-day workings of society, as God does indeed treat women differently than men.

>>136408163
Well, the Catholicism in Brazil or the U.S has a lot of things in common.
>>
>>136408142
Yes. What Jesus is saying is that though we come from parents, we most truly come from God. He did not mean literally "don't call people father." He goes on a few verses later to say "call no one teacher." Well, obviously this isn't literal. Many times in the New Testament we have people calling others father, including religious figures. (Paul himself refers to himself as a "father")

I have a question OP and I hope you will respond gently. I married a guy who was raised Catholic. I grew up Baptist. I am deeply spiritual and fond of philosophy. I remember before we got married I had a conversation with him where I cried because he said he was atheist or agnostic, and I said I couldn't see how I could marry someone who felt that way because I see Gods beauty and grace in everything around me in the world. Anyway, we got married. Probably more out of fear than love. We were mid thirties, both respectable people, slight fear of commitment issues but ready to try. I knew, however, at the altar that I was not "in love" with this man and I prayed to God for forgiveness or assuredness that this was his will and supposed to happen. We fought a lot and made each other miserable for 2 years. Rarely had sex. He was very critical of me constantly and I was angry and explosive in response. We tried and tried to come together on our similarities but our only happy times were when we traveled together. After two years I did something I am ashamed of - a coworker was kind and encouraging to me on a trip- and we kissed. I told my husband as soon as I got home. I apologized and said that I was very lonely and needed connection and understanding, and that we were not making each other happy. I moved out, we got divorced. We didn't have kids. It's been a couple of years, and this whole episode has weighed very heavily on me. I regret my actions, hurting him, not having the strength to get my needs met in a better way, or the communication skills or strength to make the marriage work. I regret compromising my character, and I've prayed for forgiveness. I'm not sure that I've been able to forgive myself. I have reflected on it a lot and I know that my original weakness was going into the marriage out of fear instead of love, it was selfish and not a faith-driven decision. I cannot undo my sin. Can God forgive me? do I have another chance?

Don't be frightened. Most people are nervous, but you will feel better once you've confessed. And if you do it frequently it will be like no big thing. Most of the time we hear sins against the 6th commandment. We do not judge. We are more like doctors than judges. We just want to help you to be well. Do a good examination of conscience first (there are many online)

Good women don't exist anymore, and regardless of this, "fixing yourself" for women is the wrong mindset. Qualifying yourself to females is the easiest way to dry their pussy and put you in the beta bin, permanently.

Pic related: Literally every woman on the face of the earth thinks like this, the "pure" ones merely manage to hide it to maintain the facade of innocence. Make no mistake: we are all animals, and all driven by our base nature. Anyone who appears otherwise is merely good at hiding it. Women who "never cheat" are merely ones who haven't been caught.

Good question. For what it's worth, early on the Mary question was big for me too, if not the biggest. Think of it this way: Mary was the Mother of God (Christ), the spouse of God (Holy Spirit) and a daughter of God (the Father). Just as we ask people to pray for us who are more faithful, in the same way we ask her to pray for us since she is so close to God. Since she is in heaven she is alive (there is no death anymore, only the separation of the soul from the body). Ultimately, all we are doing is asking Mary to pray for us (e.g. the Hail Mary prayer). I like the Remnant... EWTN is good, also check Catholic Answers on Mary as well. God bless you!

Hello Father, thanks for posting.

I'm planning on going to the seminary in about a year but there's one thing nagging me in the back of my mind: I'm a very private person, and I worry that I won't have enough time to decompress and work on a certain time-consuming artistic hobby of mine. Of course I know the graces conferred at ordination will be a huge help, but with so many stories of priestly burnout (especially in my diocese), do you think that's still a valid concern?

Hey, Sacerdos, I have a question for you. I was a devout Catholic in my youth, I went through my edgy agnostic phase and I now solidly identify myself as "culturally Christian". But that's about it. Recently I read the Bible from cover to cover recently, I really want to find God. But this world is just so evil, I can't accept God, let alone find him. What can I do? I just want to better this undeserving world, but I'm so weak and powerless and the world is so thoroughly engulfed in madness right now. I feel that there is no hope.

NO. Heaven exists outside the universe. One way I like to think of it is this: imagine the whole universe being in the mind of God, like a thought. If you imagine a man running in your head, he can never reach your skull and pop out. He's always trapped in there, no matter how "far" he runs. But God lifts us out of this mere shadow world into his realm, which is much more real.

i prefer the illustration of deduction. no matter how you reason by deduction, you must eventually come back to some assumed truths (usually inferred). theres simply no way around it, thats the only way deduction can work. this seemingly is a profound truth regarding such a question as 'proof of god,' since deduction really only gets you so many levels beyond the necessary assumptions. take maths in general) (study of quantity: the fundamental assumption is that quantity exists. sure the deductions based on that and a couple other geometric inferences (such as in 2D a line is the shortest path betwee two points, or that like parts added to like parts yields like parts [aka notions of equality]) will be bulletproof provided quantity exists - and they are fruitful regardless - but the fact remains that quantity cannot be proven to exist, and various people will actually argue that it does not exist, no matter how fruitful an idea it is.

Well I think you're wrong. I think the universe is the mind and body of God. (Heaven is just some made-up stuff for the death-cult control aspect). God is all-powerful, omniscient, all-being and immanent. Each man should pray directly to the creator according to the ancient traditions. Modern religions attempt to enslave the minds of men by separating them from God, and telling them they must pray through a man-god and seek 'forgiveness' from a priest. Pretty much the exact opposite of what Jesus taught.

Okay, then why do you keep pedophiles in the church? Why do you shield them from punishment under the law? Do you think the Church's law is good enough, that you have the right to defy civil authorities and their laws against child rape? Why do you silence victims, why do you tell them that they have guilt in their being abused?

The Church wouldn't do these things unless child rape was an essential part of the Church.

It may be a meme, but it's a true meme. Do you even know what a meme is? Do you think your average Christian knows that Paul authored OVER half the new testament? That his writings were selected by a state-sanctioned committee to be included in the 'bible' whereas the writings of some people who actually knew Jesus were excluded and even banned with ownership punishable by death? Perhaps even the writings of Jesus himself. In B4, 'Jesus, God incarnate in the flesh of man didn't ever write anything!'.

To answer your question, YES! God can forgive you. Furthermore, once you have been forgiven, guilt should have no more place with you! Guilt exists to lead us to repentance. Once we have been absolved, we should hear the words of Christ: Your sins are forgiven- now go and sin no more. I'm not sure if you're Catholic now or not, but I'd advise you to see a priest to receive absolution. I've heard confessions of sins much greater than yours and have been blessed to see the peace they have received through this sacrament. People come to confession with different sins, but all leave the same: as sinless as the day of their baptisms. Remember, it was for this that Christ came to the world and suffered, died and rose! He didn't come to just forgive small sins, but his glory is shown in forgiving all sin. Be at peace. Regarding your marriage, from what you mention I can tell you it was most certainly invalid. After moving on from this, I would suggest acquiring an anulment. You will see. With God's help you will again be made whole.

I don't know. Ever since I put my faith into Christ, I have subconsciously refrained from doing things that I would otherwise do that are absolutely abhorrent. I first started believing about a year ago, when I experienced radical change. I then turned away, yet a lot of the time when I did an immoral thing, I would feel shame, whereas I had not previously felt shame doing the same things when I never was Christian.

But this is precisely where the tens of thousands of protestant denominations disagree, isn't it? The Scriptures were entrusted to the Church and the Church retains the power to authoritatively interpret it.

The Protestant ideal of "100% VICARIOUS ATONEMENT" is ***OBVIOUSLY*** a jewish subversive addition.

Submission to Governing Authorities

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

You honestly need help. DESTROY your junk and throw it out, never meet your supplier again (CUT THEM OFF) and go get help. I'll pray for you, brother. Every problem you have, the Bible has an answer to. Start reading it, get involved in a community. That's important IMO. Get into a community to occupy yourself with something. Are you a uni student? Most unis, if not all, have a Christian Union. If not a student, just get involved in a local church. Whatever you do, DO NOT kill yourself. You could be on top of the world in a year's time, yet you might completely ruin your chances of attaining that if you off yourself. I neglected to say... tht the ONLY time that vicarious atonement is acceptable is during emergency Last Rites.

If someone who is in a state of Mortal Peril asks an ordained priest for absolution and does so HONESTLY... they will be granted that grace by the Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, through the priest.

But one cannot just go through life sinning brutally willy-nilly and then just say...

No... just, no. DO you think a just God would work as such?

As someone who has missed this whole thing, I would recommend you do something like this weekly/bi-weekly. There's a lot of interest.

I was born and raised Catholic but always skeptical. As I've hit my 30's, and listened to JBP, I've connected back to christianity. Here's my question though, I'm an AnCap and it's because if you boil the state argument down to the bottom it's all coercion. I've had this thought about how the Catholic Church has a very similar relationship to it's parishioners. Big Gov't = Big Church line of thinking. What are the arguments in following a Pope, especially if you don't agree with his policies?

I quit porn and masturbation completely about 2.5 months ago and feel free and powerful. I was never more than a 1-2x/week abuser, but still. Feels great to be free and to know you're not advancing ((( their ))) agenda.

I was raised in the United Methodist Church, fell into agnosticism for ~5 years, and now believe in God and Christ again, but don't align with the UMC (very liberal, pro-gay, etc., etc.). How might I learn more about what Catholicism has to offer? Or any other denomination, such as Eastern Orthodoxy, for that matter?

Thanks,

well we try to follow the bible as closely as possible. So if we are cucked scientology tier, so is the bible.

Of course this ignores that the bible forbids to sell the truth, and is one of the many critic points from JWs against the mainstream religions. So placing it in the same box as scientology (who are even worse) is a bit insulting.

I remember a priest allowed me to nuke a fillet mignon that I prepared for lunch (i was doing low carb) He showed me the steak that he had prepared- it was some really tough looking steak cooked by the local spanish women using too much Sazon packet.
I felt sorry for him. He seemed lonely- like he needed a male friend to do male stuff with- watching sports etc.

I invited him to dinner, and my gf was confused that I would offer dinner at my house to a priest. Pic related, its the church he ran.

I never did have him to dinner. It probably would be nice to have a Cathoilic priest as a friend.

Th cathoilic church should allow preist to marry women. I would become a priest if they did that.

the reason that people think catholics are more traditionalist is because many protestant branches have become super leftist and kikey. so they scream at catholics because they dont treat gays any different.

thats sort of the difference. original sin is a thing, jesus died so that humans may sin without having hell wrought upon them, as long as they repent and admit their sins.

im a fag, catholics will call you a fag and take you out to dinner and buy you nice things and invite you to family dinners. protestants will call you a fag and beat the shit out of you, or they'll invite you to their gay church and put you on a pedestal.

if you value being treated like a human, catholicism is nice. vatican 2.0 is fucked. watch jordan peterson, ya might like him. i remember milo got a lot of shit for being a catholic fag, he explained it perfectly to atheist protestants who couldnt wrap their heads around it.

why do you preach about some "All Powerful" guy and his son. the only way to communicate with them is by making some bread and drinking some wine. whats so great about this monotheistic religion where all different types of people worship the followings of one person (god) instead of having all these different types of people have the option to devote their worshiping mostly (thor = every day man, freyr = farmers, ect.) to one god but also to the other gods. besides, whats better communicating to your god through bread and wine, or communicating to them with every breath you take, every bite you take, ect.

You missed a good thread last night. Like you, you can also find me in the archives.

Your answer to your post https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/136328228/#q136338254

Question: How come your Catholic laity don't answer the call of Christ to

>“Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them.”—Matt. 28:19.

>(Acts 14:21) And after declaring the good news to that city and making quite a few disciples, they returned to Lys′tra and to I·co′ni·um and to Antioch,

>(Acts 1:8) but YOU will receive power when the holy spirit arrives upon YOU, and YOU will be witnesses of me both in Jerusalem and in all Ju·de′a and Sa·mar′i·a and to the most distant part of the earth.”

>(Romans 10:18) Nevertheless I ask, They did not fail to hear, did they? Why, in fact, “into all the earth their sound went out, and to the extremities of the inhabited earth their utterances.”

>(Revelation 14:6) And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, and he had everlasting good news to declare as glad tidings to those who dwell on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people,

>(Acts 20:20) while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.

>(Acts 5:42) And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.

It is a commandment of the Bible that must be fulfilled. How come Catholics don't fulfill this?

It has been said that the best you can hope for a council is that it doesn't wreck everything. I think there is a lot of good IN THE DOCUMENTS. However, people intentionally put statements in there that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. All in all, this last council must be taken in context with all the others, including Trent.

One may say the same about the murder of Christ. This life is but a short blink of the eye compared to the eternity that awaits us.
