Khabarovsk and Vladivostok have some life. Everything else is semi-abandoned. Especially Petropavlovsk that lost half of it's population and is filled with abandoned commieblocks. It's a shame because place is magnificent although cold and remote. It was very nice small town in 60s then grew very rapidly in 70s and 80s and in 90s it's economy collapsed.

There are many ways to do it. The easiest way to grab all of the images from a page is to use some browser plugin. There is an add-on for Firefox which saves pages in an archived format (MAFF), which is just a ZIP file with all images. I haven't tried it on a 4chan thread before, though, so I'm not sure if the images would be full-size.

I think the easiest "real" method for scraping is to grab the page's HTML, get all *.jpg & *.png URLs, and then run them through cURL to save them. Something like that.
