Wow... Okay I won't be an ass and just call you dumb.

Reusable launch systems cut the cost of going to mars by like 90%. Any vehicle going to mars for extended time - or any asteroid or such - requires the equivalent construction effort such as the International Space Station.

Reusable rocketry means we cut the cost down massively in the efforts to do ANYTHING in space.

This cost-cutting is proven here by making them more valuable (IE: able to do more.) http://archive.is/pFFoD

Furthermore: There is totally reason to go to space. A single Asteroid has more rare metals than our entire industry has access to on Earth. More gold. More platinum. More iron (not rare, but still). Just ONE asteroid has more value to our entire planet's industry than the productivity of every country on earth.

Bonus: You pull ONE of those into orbit and now you can construct shit in orbit. No more "tons of launches needed."

TLDR: there is MASSIVE economic reasons to go to ASTEROIDS... Mars is just cock-rubbing, I agree. No real 'economic' reason to do that... but it is still important socially speaking. Furthermore, SpaceX's efforts have benefited everything above.

>But Anon, this wont fix hungry poor kids in Africa and World Peace!

Yes. Yes it will. It will also cause a massive economic collapse as the value of gold drops to nothing. Oh, that might be why we haven't done it yet have we? Gee, wonder who would want to profit off our suffering instead of massive expansion and success?

If you want sources on the "value" of asteroid resources, go use google. It's legit.

Look. Landing on Mars still requires the International Space Station's worth of fucking R&D, Supplies, and Equipment. Reusable rocketry makes assembling a SAFER vehicle for a SINGLE VISIT a VIABLE option.

They basically cut the cost VISITING Mars by a sizable amount.
>>
>>136386974
We're not going to go through any of the effort to crash our economy like that before even a token landing. Again, I'm talking about landing on Mars and leaving, like the Apollo mission.

It is within the timeframe. The ISS took 20 years to build, roughly. Mars time-frame is about 20 years if we're aiming for 2030s (we've been working on it for 7.)

Reusable rocketry cut that time frame in half. We could go to Mars by 2020s rather than 2030s if there was an effort to do so (which there is building effort.) Reusable rocketry makes that effort a possibility.

Without the shit SpaceX has done - a Mars Mission IS going to lose "excitement" because it will take so long to get shit built in orbit and test out equipment prior to building it.

But asteroid mining and what you're saying isn't space exploration. Going to Mars would be exploration, and maybe we would set up some stations in the process, but we could just set them up without going to Mars to do that, because going to Mars is pointless.

Asteroid Mining requires space exploration to know what bodies are worth mining. Furthermore, the equipment used to put things up to explore with is the same equipment used to put things up to mine with.

You're taking it into the weeds. So I'll say this before I go work on some research I have waiting for me.

With SpaceX:
>Cheaper EVERYTHING space, no matter what you name, it is now cheaper to put up
>Quicker EVERYTHING space, see above
>Competition between private industry (SpaceX has competitors racing to catch up.)
>Less Government overhead (quicker development)
Result: Anything becomes a % more viable. Exploration? Yes. Mining? Yes.

Without SpaceX or anyone like them or any reusable equipment:
>More expensive to research and produce anything, costs you more $ as a tax payer
>Government runs everything so it is much slower unless people get excited (See: 1960s v 2000s NASA)
>No instant competition so no real rush, INTL competition isn't fast enough without Cold War
Result: Everything is slower, more expensive. There's no motivation to do it quickly or profit off of it unless it wins you votes. Which right now it really doesn't. No Cold War and the Resource Wars yet to begin.

>>136388271
It took 20 years with 1950s technology mate. Things have improved vastly. It looks the same but it is much more advanced. Especially in all of the computing as well as on-planet machining parts.

>>136388572
Moon colonies never happened because see my 2nd set of points: Government had no reason to do it. Civil Industry had not started in earnest. With Private Space Industry you get the start of your moon colonies in the next 2 decades.

TLDR: there is literally zero reason to not have privatization of the space industrial complex. SpaceX just happens to be at the forefront of it. Their innovations in reusable rocketry has cut the cost of going to space for ANY reason.

Any further points from you will be read but not responded to. I have some research to work on.

>>
>>136388861
I don't care to argue the first point, because I don't even disagree with it, nor the third. Privatization is better than government, I agree (though Elon might not completely since he loves his handouts)

The only thing I contest is that Mars, as a target, whether that means just going there or actually colonizing it, is dumb. Also that the timeframe in which that, or any of this "establishing space stations to allow functioning space mining and deep space construction" stuff is actually going to happen is too far off to get excited over, and likely won't be accomplished by the hand of Elon Musk.

>>136388922
You can just wait to see for yourself. Unfortunately I won't have any method to gloat on my deathbed about it, so this really isn't a worthwhile argument.
