The reason they get paid so little is the fact there are so many of them. Think about it, go down the street and tell me how many restaurants there are or how many people in a retail store are the cashiers. You will be surprised how many people are or were in these jobs in your town. I would estimate at least 50% of your town's population has been in food service or a cashier.

The basic premise is that there are too many people in these two fields. there is no reason to pay them a lot because they can be replaced so easily.

Remember that the same people believe we should welcome in third worlders freely under the unwritten assumption that they will take up some jobs for well below minimum wage. Basically, they think they can secure themselves an economic safety net of $15/hour for the worst job they could possibly get, and this won't cause any problems in society because 1) they assume most business in America is massive corporations who can and will pay workers $15+/hour, and 2) society will adjust for this by filling in jobs that can't afford to pay that much by hiring illegal ("undocumented") immigrants.

Does it not make sense to slightly subsidize the least well off so they can have more opportunities to rise in economic status and create more value?
