The principles which you believe in will probably mostly be simple. The application of those principles in the real world is complex. If you want to develop a set of principles from which you can judge the world, read books, and listen to diverse opinions (read a left-wing and a right-wing news source, for example, or subscribe to a number of different podcasts).
Start with Thomas Sowell's "Basic Economics". The massive list of references at the end of the book is worth as much as its content.
