In the US work culture what happens if I always refuse to stay late?

Depends on your states. Some states have "right to work" laws, where your employer can fire you at any time for any reason and not have to explain it to anybody. In other states the government will effectively unionize all low income workers, and if you're fired in that state, you bring it up with the labor board and the state will sue your employer. If you live in that second state, just the threat of getting the state involved with your employer will cause them to back off big time.

It's not a bad thing, you're allowed to work as much or little as you want to. It just bothers me how many tax dollars are wasted in court because lazy cunts can't hold down a job.
