Ever since Americans landed man on the moon the soviets struggled to compete and now their space program is a shell of it's former glory and this was happening years before the USSR collapsed.. What happened?
To hungry to fly.
>america could afford to waste money because it had excess money to waste
>russia didn't

what America had in money to waste, the Russians had people to waste. one ran out faster.

maybe russians were running out of qualified me for the space programs. There are rumors that yuri gagarin wasn't the first man in space but the first man to survive a trip to space and the soviets using propoganda to make it seem like he is first in space.

And yet, Americans make up the majority of the 18 to have died in spaceflight.
This is a question for /his/ or /sci/, not /pol/, where burgers care more for their precious prestige than clean analysis. All you'll find here are stale memes and disrespect, OP.
The real answers:
>USSR was always working with an electronics and equipment handicap and struggling to compete through sheer ingenuity
>The real measure of "space dominance" and the entire point behind the race was the ability to deliver a nuclear payload and the USSR had the bigger, dirtier, MIRVier stockpile right up to the end of the whole conflict
>USSR also never lost dominance in long-term orbiting space stations
>USSR could have also competed with the space shuttle if the funds didn't dry up
>Mismanagement and socialist autism -> stagnation
>Civilians in the states stopped giving a shit about space soon after the moon landings. NASA has never recovered and there is no interest in returning to the moon. Shell of former glory doesn't just describe communism

No one can compete with American ingenuity. We bad!
I believe it was the rocket engine design.
It was superior but more technically complicated . America beat them to space and they reduced the funding.
Their engine design is now the design we use on our rockets built by former Russian scientists.
The reason for all this, I would guess, is because once you have ICBMs and satellites the utility of space travel other than LEO drastically decreases.
