Sure Obama worked with the government as a senator for a term, but that's like having a new doctor run an entire hospital rather than a businessman in another field. When you have no board to report to, you can operate with basically no strings attached.

It's not bad if you're the business owner but if I'm looking to hire a CEO, I want someone who has experience being accountable to someone else, not someone used to only serving their own self interest, often willing to use under-handed tactics to that end.

It doesn't seem like much but whenever I've seen it in my company which has had some CEO changes in my tenure there, it's always the ones who ran successful but privately owned businesses that tended to do poorly in the long run because they had a hard time juggling anything except managing the bottomline. If a board member wanted to be more ethical or be more modern or what have you, that executive had issues accommodating because he didn't understand why he couldn't just do what he wanted.

And that's to say nothing of the issues of managing a publicly owned company that is partially owned by thousands of people.

Now that's just the issue of a private owner of a business becoming accountable to 10 major stock holders of 1000s of minor ones. Trump's issue is that he's now accountable to his own constituents, the other two branches of government (and vice versa ala checks and balances) and other people in his cabinet not to mention the general political structure of the RNC that let him get this far (they could have Bernie'd him if it weren't for priebus).

That's the big issue Trump is having: he assumed that being President meant you got the scepter and throne and can operate with basically no restraint. He fundamentally doesn't understand his new level of accountability.

I'd say its been a particular shift for Trump because he was in a privately owned real estate business where you adopt a fundamentally GGR approach (which is useful in many spheres, public and private) where you just have to ALWAYS BE CLOSING and you'll do fine. After they sign, you move on
