While I'm sure it was a tough decision for President Truman to make, I believe it was the right one.

The idea of war is to kill the enemy with the least amount of casualties on YOUR side. It was obvious that the Japanese weren't going to surrender and the invasion of Japan has been estimated to have cost more than a MILLION of American lives.

While I hate the idea of killing civilians with nuclear weapons, proportionality should be a guideline in war. While some people think that it was "immoral" to drop the atomic bombs I also think it's equally as immoral to not use whatever means necessary to save the lives of your own soldiers.

It was the right thing to do.

It's a leader's responsibility to win the war while preserving the lives of their OWN soldiers. While I hate the fact that innocent women and children were killed by the atomic bombs, the proportionality of the alternative more than justifies it.

In essence, the Manhattan project knew that the atomic bombs were technically possible, but they couldn't build them in the time allowed and only actually tested them after the war was long over.

This is why there is a long time between the end of the war and the first filmed atomic bomb tests (Operation Crossroads in July 1946)

What was actually dropped on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a very large fuel air bomb, this was dropped by parachute so that reports of a single bomb would be widespread.

Then after the inital drop devestated the city, the remainder of Hiroshima and much, but not all of Nagasaki were fire bombed in a separate raid (probably the night of 6th/7th of August for Hiroshima and the night of 9th/10th of August for Nagasaki), with the pilots being misdirected to believe they were other targets, only the navigators knew the real location and even then they didn't know the names of the cities, just the coordinates.

A lot of people don't realize that the reason Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen is that the rest of Japan was ALREADY destroyed by conventional bombs.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were comparitively small cities. It was an effort to show the force of atomic weapons while trying to REDUCE civilian casualties as what would have been greater in the bigger cities in Japan.
