Buy a handgun. Keep it simple. DA revolver or striker fire semi without external safety.
Learn how to transition. Nothing fancy, keep it slow and simple.
Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.
I could give you my most tricked out gamer AR with a 100 round SureFire mag and sweep you in three gun with a bone stock SU-16CA
Stick to irons. Skip the optic for now. Put every penny into practice ammo.
Once you do all this, and fully understand the second sentence in this post, then you can worry about stuff like "features"

from one califag to another, our state is pretty much a lost cause. anigunners have more money and more votes. only hope is to get federal intervention, and trump did campaign with a firearms coalition. i think that gun control should be a federal issue depending on how you interpret the constitution and the supremacy clause and the fact that the "supreme law of the land" says shall not be infringed. having standardized control across all 50 states should cut down on arms trafficking, get more guns into the hands of law abiding citizens and fix things for other states such as HI and NY with gun laws on par or more restrictive than we have.
As for options, the KELTEC RDBC seems like a promising featureless option, or there are other AR stocks that offer a more traditional rifle grip

I custom built my AR. I really love it but the thing with firearms is one is never enough and then 2 isn't enough. 20 guns later you realize that you're a junkie. My next fix is probably going to be a Savage 110 .338. I have a few HP rifles but never a .338. The ammo is really expensive. Like $50 for 20 rounds of sub par ammo. You really have to have a reloading set up or a stupid amount of disposable income. Anyway, I'm rambling. My intention was to say if you can get good with a high powered rifle you can get ahead of the curve when it comes to an AR or similar platform.

I have a type 56 and a yugo sks. I've also put some rounds through a mini and my "never miss a range day" rifle is an m1 carbine.

For bench shooting, which is most of California unfortunately, a fin grip rifle has no drawbacks over any other rifle. For classes I'll put my thordsen stock up against any of the above and it'll perform better. Engaging the safety may be a problem with small handed people but ambi safeties are out there.

I ran a class with a fin grip with a thumb shelf. other than the lag in manipulating the safety it was doable. Certainly better than dealing with a mag lock.

Would I prefer an un-neutered? Of course.
