That's a hard one. I always recommend the Sony ICF-SW7600GR, it's very good. Consumer portable sets will always lack features that real communications receivers have though, like RF gain control, AGC which you can adjust, filters, etc.

The Sony I mentioned is good, it has AM sync.

To me a field radio has to be small and work off battery power (12v or torch cells) but small enough to be reasonably carried.

An option is to look at used ham radios too, they have the best receivers and filtering, or military / monitoring rigs.

To start with the Sony is probably a good option, it's a very solid receiver and the last quality one still made new in Japan. If you get it, get the AN-LP1 loop antenna too if you can afford it.

The number of times skyking is said is completely meaningless, and depends on atmospheric conditions. If there's too much interference, they'll repeat it four times to clarify.
Skyking messages are intended for a single operational unit, the whole point is to inform other units to disregard the message or relay the message onto the unit if they're incapable of decoding it themselves.
There's a lot of different types of unit who'll require specific messages other than air bases, aircraft and missile complex (who use fiber optic for the majority of their coms anyway,) for example: radar facilities, AA facilities and depots.
The only known phrase used for an extreme emergencies is "Foxtrot, or Foxtrot flash."
