Universities are simply moving towards a more practical function. If you need to prove specialization before anyone would even think of giving you the job that you want, you go to school. If said field has an extremely limited number of job opportunities (i.e. the only job in the field is as a teacher; when there's one teacher for every 100 students taking the program, it's starting to look an awfully lot like a pyramid scheme), you should consider whether that's a job or a hobby. People are even starting to question whether universities teach people how to think and be good problem solvers. It's not like university is the only path to a decent living. You can always enter a trade school or go straight into the work force. If that's true, you need to seriously leverage your experience and find another job ASAP. Drop the AA and BA/BS lies from your resume, you have enough experience to get a similar job, you'll actually get away with this if you do that. Here's the thing

A BA in something, yes even Gender Studies, is relatively more useful than no school long term. I don't even put my major on my resume anymore, just BSc and the university. Nobody gives a fuck, at some point all it does is work in your favor. Harder to offer you less, because "no degree", and easier to get that promotion/new job because "BA/BS required".

Traditional academia isn't coming back. Physical campuses aren't the most efficient means of going about intellectual pursuits anymore. Why go to a library when practically every book finds its way onto the internet? Why listen to lectures from some third rate academic when lectures from top tier academics are readily available online?

STEM and law will probably keep something that resembles the traditional settings, albeit more compact, but I suspect that over the next twenty years, everything else is either vanishing from formal higher education (interested parties can study on their own and meet like-minded people online), moving to trade school, or having accreditation acquired purely by test.
