I'd like to give my input on this. I'm keeping my last name when I get married sometime next year, but I had already changed my last name some time ago.

I came from a really poor and abusive household and I wanted nothing to do with my family, so once I turned 18, I was legally allowed to change my name. Now, not only did I never have to see them again, but I had a fresh start to make a name for myself that lined up with my values and aspirations, punishing those I left behind by making them the last of their name.

I'd imagine that most men that do end up taking the brides name do so for reasons very similar to my own. Perhaps the brides father became a surrogate father to them and they wanted to carry that on.

This is coming from a slav with french waifu. I didn't want to give her or the kids a weird last name, and I wanted to integrate fully into french culture. Also helps that I wanted to put my former nationality behind me completely and have little sympathy for my family at this point.
