But survival makes it not murder. Same with suicide. So a lot of what would have been murder 40 years ago is now assault, lowering the murder rate. I know the OP address all violent crime but the common point in the media of our "declining murder rate" isn't accurate. It isn't more violent, but our current levels of violence are still extreme for a developed country.

The 90's were over the top insane, just because we're not as bad as then doesn't mean we're good now.

Drug trafficking became more common as transportation improved.
The resulting crackdown on drugs resulted in more organized crime (think prohibition gangsters but with niggers in charge)

It's more complicated than just these causes, but they are probably the main ones.

For one the US isn't a monolith. Plenty of rural and rich urban communities saw little change. Most of the problems of the 60s-90s (suicide, drug use, murder, rape) were inner city problems. In the 1970s, when the crime rates were still relatively low compared to what they would be, most major cities starting declining and becoming totally lawless. Before leftists/liberals gained control of most major cities the police had far more authority (they shot fleeing violent crime suspects, btfo protesters, did constant raids on druggies and sex clubs, ect). They were not totally deregulated but they had authority of the criminal underground. The death penalty was also very accepted, along with very harsh sentencing. In the 1960s and 1970s the death penalty was abolished all over and sentencing was often change to give perps a "second chance" or whatever. The police were also attacked as being fascist for their treatment of the criminal underground, and many new legislators attacked perceived instances of racism or abuse and rolled back police authority. After 30 years of all that stupidity Bill Clinton's crime bill and our advancing surveillance and response technology finally brought crime rates down, but now we're basically a police state. One other major factor in all this, mostly related to the drug trade and murder, is our treatment of the mentally ill. especially in the 1980s a lot of insane asylums were shut down, leaving thousands of crazy homeless who often committed crimes and got hooked on drugs.
