As someone who listened to all seven main books on audio.. I'm ashamed to call this a Dark Tower film. It's more like a fucking cliffnotes version of the entire series. They Airbender'd it.

That said, I was excited to see how Idris would play Roland... but Roland wasn't written worth a shit. I was genuinely interested to see how he'd handle playing a gritty, old father figure to Jake Chambers.

In all of the illustrations prior to the film, Roland had a Clint Eastwood-like appearance. This is important because the entire series is a pop culture remix, and that was a specific reference.

Roland is supposed to be a lankier version of Clint Eastwood, so Idris Elba was a bad choice for this role. The whiteness of the character in the books also affects how certain other characters interact with him, so by changing the race of the man character, youre already changing the dynamic of certain character interactions.
They also tried to cram 5 or 6 books into one movie.
