I'm a Southerner who moved to Vermont for college. Yes it is the whitest place I have ever been, but this is essentially ruined due to the rampant ultra-liberalism. Rutland, for example, welcomed a huge number of Syrian refugees a year or so ago, and the town where I moved to for work hosts the most notorious liberal arts Tumblrina college in the country.

Dude I'm from New York and as much as I would like it to be, New York's not New England. I think it was briefly considered part of New England for administrative purposes during colonial times and Eastern Upstate NY can have a very New Englandy feel - but it's not - different settlers (French Protestants and Dutch, not Puritans) and very different political structure - county vs town system. Small fishing towns on Long Island also used to have a New England vibe but it's still not New England.

West Virginia is pretty comfy. But there's a lot less too it. I prefer the maritime aspect of Mass, as WV is landlocked. There is also a severe lack of industry in WV and lots of people leave every year to find work. WV is a far more conservative state mainly because it's rural and localized.
