Adam Smith states that the wealth of a nation correlates to the strength of it's workforce and that workforce is dependent on it's faith in the nation's law and order. Why work hard if your earned wealth can be stolen from you? What is the difference between El Paso Texas (the lowest murder rate of any city in the US) and Juarez Mexico (the murder capital of the world), if not it's police force and the safety and economy it provides?

With that said, Vietnam and Watergate broke the people's faith in it's government, and productivity has suffered ever since.
