It was bait to get the media to contact Hersh and put Seth's name in the headlines again. Hersh makes a statement, then almost immediately afterwards a youtube video that was uploaded weeks prior (set to private so nobody could see it, then made public) shows him talking on the phone saying things that completely contradict his own statements made earlier in the day.
Now Hersh, a well-respected award-winning journalist who broke major stories in the past, has to explain why he willingly lied to the media. And also people are talking about Seth Rich again, and finding even more connections and information.
