It was 'owned' by the League of Nations and Germany needed Poland's permission to reunifiy. Otherwise it just would've happened.
Germany also asked for a railway through the corridor that Poland got after WW1.

But that was too much for Poland, as Poland had port rights in Danzig. They decided they'd rather go to war after Britain gave Poland their war guarantee, because they bet on France and Germany steamrolling Germany and giving them even more land on top of what they had.
In the end that is what happened, so Poland made their choice. Apparently being a communist pupper and having hundreds of thousands killed was worth it, but oh well, that is what they chose in the end.
