Rome in the West didn't really "fall" though. It's really blurry historically, but here's the basics.

Rome in the west slowly delegated itself out of existence to Germanic warlords in return for military service against other Germanic warlords. Even after 476, up until about Clovis' time, most of the warlords and petty despots still got their positions "de jure" from the emperor in Constantinople. These people thought of themselves as Franks, Visigoths, Lombards etc. living inside the Empire. Latin was still spoken by the upper classes, they still used the aqueducts and roads (until the fell apart, but that had been happening well before 476).

The Church kept most of the Roman institutions alive for a while, which is why it gained so much power. Eventually a woman became empress Charlemagne decided he was Emperor now. He even tried to marry the Empress and "unite" both halves of the empire again.

The Goths took advantage of it to plunder the Empire up and down.

The Romans were too afraid to fight the Goths, so they let the Goths into the Empire under certain conditions and they were plundered anyway.
