Why are younger Americans increasingly choosing not to get driver's licenses, /pol/?

>he share of high school seniors across the country who have a driver’s license dropped from 85.3 percent in 1996 to a record low 71.5 percent in 2015, according to data from the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future survey.

>The drop has been sharpest in the South, where the share of high school seniors with a driver’s license fell from 88.6 percent in 1996 to 71.2 percent in 2015. High school seniors are most likely to have a license in the Midwest — 80.4 percent — and least likely to have one in the Northeast — 64.8 percent.

This is a big shift in terms of American culture, where getting your license as soon as possible used to be a top priority for almost every teen.

Because every subsequent generation becomes more and more infantilized by globalism. I know at least a half dozen people my age (29) who don't have licenses but aren't disqualified from having them. They're just too lazy to take the test and make their parents drive them around, or they beg for rides from friends.

I was stupid and spent my adolescence spending all my money supporting my deadbeat family of self-entitled emotionally abusive baby boomers. Any time I'd get close to having enough to buy a car, get a license, etc, someone would be on the verge of homelessness or whathaveyou, and I couldn't say no. I got nothing out of it, they put literally zero effort into my upbringing.

Now I'm 26, still no car, small town, no real prospects, no education, family is just as deadbeat as ever, and I no longer care that much. I'm just hoping the apocalypse happens before I'm too old to hold my own in a fight.

I never got one because I grew up in downtown Toronto. It's impossible to find parking and if you do it costs an arm and a leg plus your entire nutsack -- traffic moves at a slow crawl. The subway is $2 and gets you around faster.

>>135968798

>>135971396

Just the same as if you cranked up a printing press and ran off 30 K in new bills.
Fuck the dealers, fuck marketers and fuck bankers , double. now , fuck off
>>
>>135969559

What the fuck are you talking about? New cars are GOAT compared to the shitty 90s cars I grew up with.
>>
>>135968477
Driver's licenses used to be simple to get. You took drivers Ed at school for the cost of "nothing" and then took the test at 15 or 16. In some states, no training was even required. Insurance was optional if you didn't want comprehensive coverage and weren't worried about being sued.

Today, a lot of states have multiple layers if bureaucratic bullshit. A kid can't even start without taking a class, a test, insurance. Then has to take another class but the schools don't offer it so they are about $800 and only run in evenings or on weekends for an hour. That's 40 lessons. Even taking it every evening, takes 8 weeks. That qualifies you for the SECOND level. You can't get the "real" license until 18 and even then may be limited to certain conditions until 21.
Liability insurance can cost $200 or more every month.

TL;DR it's a pain in the ass and expensive.

>>135969605
Wrong. If you actually know how to drive a standard, it isn't complicated.
Real problem now is finding one. They used to be cheaper but now cost a couple thousand more than standard and may need to be ordered.
Since no one learns to drive them, they burn out clutches too often...which costs another $800 to replace every year.
>>
>>135971112
No, retards like the one I replied to seem to think self-driving cars need to be 100% accident free to be viable when they actually only need to be as good or better than humans which isn't hard because a lot of people are shitty drivers. The biggest problem a self driving car has to deal with is people. Without people, self driving cars would most likely very rarely have any problems
>>
>>135968477
Because the future is in "common people" not being able to even register a personal non-self-driving car, and everyone else will just drive first in service cars like Uber, or shared self-driving cars (like the current shared bicycles in a lot of cities, and there are some programs for shared cars already, all smartphone-activated and tracked of course).

In America it might not happen that quickly, but in Europe cars will soon require a license similar to a gun license.

This shit will really bake your noodle. When you get a car you get a certificate of title. It is not the actual ownership title of the car however. It simply ' certifies ' that the state has a title for that car. You must then pay ' Rent ' in form of registration / fees / ect. just to drive it. It is also considered ' collateral ' since the car was only paid for in FRN's not ' Lawful ' money, which is gold or silver.

Cars are expensive as shit

A cheap used car in moderately decent condition is $3000 minimum with at least $1000 minimum up front. And that's if you are lucky that it's actually IN good condition, and isn't going to break down on you a couple of months down the line.

And god help you if your car DOES break down or need repair. Some types of repair can be more than the price of a car itself. Even buying a clunker and fixing it up can cost you a couple of thousand, at which point why not just get a used car?

And before you say anything, new cars cost about as much as a house these days. Unless you are super well off, a new car is a pipe dream.

In Sweden it's ridiculously hard to get a driver licenses and fucking expensive. Also force us to learn eco-driving which is bull-fucking-shit. Driving schools are literally scams.

You can either buy a package which cost about $800( 10 lessons and a theory-package that don't included the teory books???) or you can buy 1 lesson at time which cost $65 and a theory-lesson $52 at time. And this doesn't end there we also have to pay for a risk education, which is two steps, were you have to test drive through water and how aquaplaning feels like and so on. Also how alcohol and drugs is dangerous for driving.

I have know people who have paid like $2000 and they still failed the driving test and when you driver up(you have guy from the school who will judget your driving skills, either pass or fail). Lol.

I can drive manual, but I don't anymore (my first car was manual because it was cheaper) and last month I had to use a work ute that was manual and it was pretty fucking embarrassing the amount of times I stalled at roundabouts or quick changing lights.

I really hate it though. If I was driving in the country on the weekends, it's great. It's actually fun.

When I was a kid it was just do a shitty test for your learners permit, then go for the driving test whenever you feel you can pass.

Nowadays there's all sorts of paperwork in the way. You never hear an end to how bad young drivers are on the news since there's a hit piece on them what feels like daily. There seems to be this big push to punish them for existing with all sorts of weird rules and regulations. I think learner drivers need 150hrs of documented driving with an open license holder (times, dated and signed) before they are even eligible for the driving test. I don't necessarily feel it's a bad thing to have more experience, but the people passing this stuff never had to do that themselves and are just hypocritically attacking younger drivers.

Meanwhile all the old fogies forget that they got their license driving up and down an empty road a few times, as if they somehow popped out of the womb middle aged with 20yrs of driving experience, having never, EVER been young or lost so much as a single point! Public transport is still pretty cancerous, but it's a lot easier to get around without a license and I wouldn't really blame kids for opting out of the bullshit. Then there's all the bullshit costs associated with car ownership and operation that are worse than ever.

But ah, those gosh darn hoons and whatnot! They are the real problem! Why don't we just stop all young people from having a license until they are 40! Glad I was never a child, gee whiz.

Economy car shocks aren't magic. Suspension shit blows, loosens, etc. Wheel bearings go. Clutches go. Trannies need flushed of ATF/gear oil and clutches replaced. Brake pads wear. Brake rotors wear. Calipers seize, pistons corroded and bores pitted. Brake lines rot out. Drums get in really bad shape. Diffs strip their gears. Downpipes rust out. Shit happens.

Enjoy slamming on your brakes, only to have none, and then going out of control when a tie rod end pops out. Why? You were behind someone in a newer or well maintained car, and they hit their brakes as to not collide with a pedestrian.

I see accidents sometimes, and it's always either an incompetent motorcyclist who rekt himself trying to brake/turn or a complete shitbox that plowed into something else because its old drum brakes were no longer functional and the tires had zero tread left.

Because adults are turning into children.
Especially in America where there are long distances and public transportation is shit, in Europe you don't really need a license.

I have almost 300k miles on my '03 civic and the only thing on your list I've had to replace is brakepads and tires. Twice. My wallet handled it. Flushing fluids is cheap as shit if you do it yourself. I'd change the oil and filter myself too but the price difference is negligible for the time it would take (I don't have a garage and lifts)

>take the bus.
I like being on time to work and not having to wake up at 5am and walk 5 blocks to the stop, only to have the bus show up full of animals.

>inb4 anecdotal evidence!!
aka, most of your argument.
>>
I don't have my license and it really bothers me because I tried my best. Yet, everyday I see foreign scum and illiterate retards breaking the law on the road. I'm getting my permit again soon and going to take the test again, but I can confidently say federal driver tests are horseshit.

You schedule a test two months away at 3am because that's the earliest they become available and that's the time when new dates are posted. Who knows what can happen that day, in my case I got a fucking snowstorm the entire week. You get there and pray you don't have a minority as your instructor. Then you do everything instructed and get told some bs reason why you failed. I got "entering an intersection on green is fine, but you didn't make it all the way through before the light turned yellow. Sorry that's an automatic failure".

Wanted to beat that nigger lady's face in. Lucky to live in a big city where public transport is good, but I'm so sick of seeing niggers on the sub. Don't have enough money for a car, but I have to get this shit in order and fix my life.

>>
>>135990814
My shitbox does 70 just fine. I sense a great deal of projecting though. Maybe your buses full of degenerates and illegals are why places like NYC made 25 the speed limit for streets.
>>
>>135990901
im pretty sure 25 is the limit because it's a street and not an open road.

I didn't bother because I figured after depreciation and new cars boomers always buy my dad has probably lost over £500k and I could just take the tram and live in the city
>>
I only just got my first car recently at age 25. Didn't need one through university and until recently I was cycling to work so I could save more money. Now I've moved back to where I grew up (away from all the foreigners) to buy a house so I need a car now since jobs are a bit further to commute than where I was before.
>>
>>135968477
Cost.
Insurance is stupid expensive until you hit 25.
To be able to afford a car, insurance, fuel/maintence you need thousands of dollars.
If you are making anywhere near minimum wage, you are working only to keep your car.

The two most likely situations are

You don't know what the fuck a car is supposed to handle like, and all the clunks, whirrs, and creaks of your car are just normal and not impending doom at 350k miles
The last owner of your car replaced a lot of critical shit around it's 150-200k mile effective service life

It's almost as if you aren't aware of walking, biking, transit, or tram.
>>
Not having a driver's license essentially limits you to only move inside your city and the surroundings. With a car you can drive anywhere, anytime.

The superior choice.
>>
>>135991244
I've had the car for a decade. I do this crazy thing called maintaining it. Ya know, so none of those critical failures you listed actually happen?

And of course it does 70 in a straight line. When the fuck else would I be doing 70? Maybe the reason you think cars fall apart all the time is because you don't know how to fucking drive.

Because my car and its tires are not cheap, poorly maintained, dated shit and can handle corners at modest speeds like 70mph just fine without spinning out and rolling. Just 2008 toyota camry things.

I also tracked it and took some sweepers in excess of 100mph. Did fine. No noises, no roll, no unpredictable handling characteristics. Compared to my last car which was in rather poor shape and developed a slight tendency to oversteer due to weird uneven bushing wear, yeah.

>>135991449

You're either full of shit or completely out of your mind taking corner at 70+ off a track. What makes the whole thing laughable is you call my car a shitbox yet you're in an almost 10 year old vehicle yourself that you are abusing the fuck out of if you are telling the truth.

>>
>>135991640
It's legal to go 100mph on private pavement fag

The speed limit here is 70 for trucks. Driving pace is 75. Corners are posted at 45 or 55, but nobody cares about yellow signs because they're not legally binding and only serve as recommendations to unstable vehicles like semis and shitboxes.

Sweden, we have to know how to park reverse between obstacles on a hill without machine making strange noises, we have to drive on narrow roads never to cross the white line for an hour. We have to drive accordingly to laws when not even construction companies follow the laws and paint the blue line for parking way too close to pedestrian crossing, many times you even have to park on with one wheel on road and other wheel on pavement. All this and more on exam for driving. You also had to know how to change oil and how to drive in fog. I am not making shit up, i just described to you what i done to pass the driving exam. While Anglo just sits in car and a relative teaches them how to drive on straight road in own car.

Guy I work with has a son who is 20 and has no interest in getting a license. His dad constantly preaches how great and successful the kid is and how much better he is than everyone else. He is the very definition of neet. He brought his kid to work a year ago and I was talking about electrician certifications (kid loves doing electrician work), the kid quickly piped up and angrily said that certifications mean nothing and that he would be able to make money no problem without a stupid certification, the dad was fully backing him.

On the same day I chose to drive my sports car into work and this kid was challenging me to a race against his remote control car....(I'm only 7 years older than the kid).

The cognitive dissonance of the father is astounding.

Oh thx, have you ever been on road in your life? Everybody has his wheel on white line at one point in time, if not on straight line, definitely when on curve, especially around villages. Even when you go for gas many people don't see the clearly white marked line, they just go over it to go faster inside. We don't drive like in Australia where you got 100 miles straight wide road. When you taking exam you always go narrow roads, always have to turn left. Driving instructors here don't know what straight line for more than 1 minute is or what turning right is, they always want you to cross somebody's path.

I'm not an electrician myself, however I work alongside electricians. I can tell you that being an electrician pays extremely well and will pay even more in the next 10 years. Certified electricians are in very high demand since the majority of US citizens are so focused on going to college and not trade schools and this trend is continuing to grow. Become a certified electrician and in the next 25-30 years you'll be one of the few people who can retire with a solid pension.

Also, I don't know of any company (big or small) that would hire an electrician who isn't certified, it's a huge liability.

They never let you merge onto the highway. It's common courtesy to move to the middle lane when you see someone's trying to merge, or at least release the throttle so they can pass you, but these old people NEVER do any of that since they don't have the slightest clue as to what's going on around them.
