This. Many american cities exist due to people driving though, usually truck drivers and people on vacation or business travel. These towns are super easy to recognize as they all look like the OP's picture. They are built and designed to have their "downtown" be something someone out of town can easily get off the interstate highway, then quickly see where they can get gas, food, and lodging.

Other cities that are not built off interstates and meant to serve the people passing through on said highway look more like the town pictured here, which has its purpose in farming and the downtown is meant to serve the residents who live and work there. The larger cities dont look like this as they are typically avoided by interstate traffic due to congestion and confusion, unless its the desired destination. Youve all seen pictures of these cities and they look nothing like the OP's picture.

A good chunk of america, especially rural small town america, is built for a single purpose, and for most that purpose involves people getting low on fuel and hungry on their car trip across country or across the state and the more inviting it looks from the highway the more customers get off and spend money.

I can vouch when on a long car trip ill avoid the small towns where i cant see a good gas station and non shit tier restaurant to get off, ill skip towns that look more like the OP's picture and go to the ones with more than just fast food and gas stations, however a trucker might want a quick meal and gas and be back on the road in 15-20 min, pictured town is perfect for that, he can find the food and gas he needs without knowledge of the town and get back on the road with minimal wasted time. That is the purpose of the OP's town.

We always pass through Breezewood coming from Wisconsin back to the DC area. It's a hassle but it also feels good because you know you're almost back home. We usually stop at the McDonalds or Starbucks to take a short rest. I guess most people driving from Chicago to DC go through there. It would feel weird not stopping there since it's always been part of returning to the DC area.

The vast majority by surface area is, if america wasnt so large there wouldnt be a need for an extensive highway system that has small towns meant to serve the people traveling between the larger cities.

Before the highway system there were small towns with a giant water tower next to the railroad, so the steam engine could refill and people could get off during and grab a bite to eat. Other than providing a location for local farmers to dump grain that was their only purpose. Once highways were built across the country the same concept was applied.

If this wasn't the case you could look forward to a 10-15hour drive through farmland and nothing between gas stations and restaurants. Because of this set up you rarely have an hour or two between locations you can gas up, eat, and find a hotel to sleep at....which is the point.


Yeah it looks like shit...but when your driving and its dark out and you just want dinner, a full tank of gas and a night of sleep seeing the light oasis from the highway is great...ok theres the hotel, and i could eat at that place, and oh look a shell gas station...i guess ill get off here....

Without it you would need to look up or already know that the next exit has gas, a reasonable hotel, and a restaurant you'll want to eat at....its function over form certainly.

Oh and before you mention those blue signs with places to eat/sleep/refuel the point of those obnoxious signs is you can see from the highway its close....people who are passing through and unfamilair with the area just want something right off the highway, and for those spending the night on their multi day road trip, when they wake up they want to see the highway rather than have to figure out where they need to go to get back. its really a simple concept that makes zero sense until you do multiple long distance road trips. The more you drive the more you appreciate the system...and you also learn to appreciate fast foods concept of consistency across the nation...you know exactly what your getting no matter where your at.

And now maybe europeans who cant figure out american rural towns and cheap fast food might understand why it became a thing. Just have to imagine being in an unfamiliar location after an 8 hour drive, weary from the drive, you just want something familiar to eat, a hotel you recognize that wont be a diseased shit hole, and gas you know wont be shit (not really a problem but it once was)...youll make this decision on the road when you see all the signs and decide "yeah ill stop here" vs pulling off a dark exit because you know theres a restaurant and gas station and hotel...but is it a right of left off the highway? will it look like shit in a seedy area? Am i going to have to pull over at 10pm and ask someone where the fuck to go? you avoid all this with the set up seen in the picture above...notice the prevalence of the interstate via the green signs as one of the predominant features of the town and it starts to make sense. Towns like this see thousands of people pass through a day dropping $50-$100 or more if they spend the night. Now you know why they exist.
