I hope you plan on living on the east half of West Virginia. Anywhere near Charleston, Parkersburg or Huntington is white trash/meth lab central. Some of the eastern counties are very lightly populated. Less than 5000, some less than 1000. Its fine to live here if you don't want to be near anyone but you need to find the right spot. Anywhere near people is suffering. Calhoun, Roane county, Wirt county and Ritchie counties are the only good counties on the western half. Taxes are very cheap there. Especially roane and ritchie.

Oh I know. I am originally from the low country. The mountain folk dont know how good they have it. I think white refugees from metro areas in South will bring their insights with them tho. Otherwise I know Appalachians were traditionally looser than other Southerners. Also I know Confederate groups grew popular in mountains decades after Civil War. Some books argue different clans used Civil War as excuse to carry out vendettas, but they didnt care for ideological reasons

I live in eastern West TN which is far from the mountains but we share a common element in that we voted against secession like they did. Simply put we had few to no slaves and generally poorer people economically. The CSA failed to sell the cause to us which just made it come off as an aristocratic rebellion. Plus we often hated slaves due to kinda hard to compete against free labor plus our ancestors fought in the Revolution and War of 1812 and often were living on land given to us by the government. Ultimately as far as I'm concerned it's the CSA's fault for not winning the hearts of many counties in the south no matter how just the cause.
