Here we have christians taht clearly suffer the loss through fire. Although you can argue it does not explicitly mean purgatory, it proves that the concept is "biblical" as protestants put it. I've been thinking about the idea that those damned to hell during the millennial reign are damned for annihilation. If there's a subsequent final battle at the end of the millennial reign after the earth has been rebuilt then what purpose did the rebuilding have if not to turn those who were led astray by circumstance but were at heart good, and originally destined for paradise. Before someone says Christians don't reincarnate, there is testimony from kids who had previous life knowledge, most notably one kid who said he died and spent some time in heaven but then God sent him back down. At any rate, this would indicate that the millennial reign is not the literal reign of Christ but symbolically, the evil is removed from the world and Christ returns through us all. Once we fix the world after 1000 years, evil is again allowed back but presumably good has its affairs in order and ends it.

Anons, I'm in dire need of help here. I've had the NIV bible for a long time now, following it closely. I've recently came across various articles proclaiming the NIV to be a perversion of God's word, and I would never want to study something perverted. It was a present from a close family member, and I have gone through an awful lot with that book, but I also do not want to just keep materialistic ties...

I feel like satan is sowing seeds of doubt for my own bible, but I myself have found inconsistencies in its word when compared to the KJV. Please help

NIV can easily lead people astray if they don't know what to look for. Yup, because of the Oxford Movement (which attempted to move Anglicanism towards a Catholic liturgy) within the Anglican Church, many Anglicans now consider themselves Anglo-Catholic. Every once in awhile some anglo-catholics will convert to Catholicism. (Though this is rare now. I consider myself anglo-catholic and would never convert).

The Catholic church developed a canon where Anglican converts could keep their Anglican saints and liturgy and still become Catholic. Anglican clergy could also keep their wives and still become married catholic priests. And yea, Luther's view on free will is REALLY complex. I'm currently in a religious masters program studying the reformation and its a nightmare to some extent.

Things have changed a lot, Calvinists and Lutherans used to brawl about predestination and such. However, mainline Protestantism is pretty much agreed on this now:

Mainline Protestants believe God moves first (but fight over to what extent he is in control of a persons free will to choose salvation)

Arminian Protestants believe that man moves first and chooses to be saved and believe in God. (ie. methodists and those types.)

no yeah I do agree that God offers everyone grace, with free will added, molinism is a fine doctrine, but yeah as far as I can remember (I read Luther's book against free will, he was replying to an Arminian) anyways he made it clear he did not believe in free will, he believed in total inability, I know some people have said he considered free will an option when people are free of sin after the ressurection but I can't confirm that. Nothing wrong with the NIV, Anon. The KJV is not the standard by which to judge other translations. The NIV translators made use of more updated information regarding the Old Testament texts than the KJV translators. Also, for the New Testament, they used thousands of different original Greek manuscripts, whereas the KJV translators didn't use any, relying on the Latin Vulgate and a couple of contemporary (for them) critical editions of the Greek New Testament of dubious authority.

It is the right choice. Everyone should read the KJV at least once no matter what denomination you are a part of. It's absolutely beautiful.

That being said, go learn Koine Greek and read the New Testament in the original Greek. It's a magical experience, though you won't gain as many insights as you think you will.

Yup, I'm basically in agreement with you. Hence why I go anglo-catholic rather than the heavily protestant liberal side of the Anglican church. Note though that 95% of Calvinists have no idea what their churches policy is regarding predestination. And the liberal sects of Calvinism are basically universalist now. I for one though think the Catholics interpretation of "eternal hellfire" and damnation and this and that is why everyone left. Eternal punishment for finite crimes makes no sense, and is not biblical. revelation 20:14 was in context of a battle that was happening in 18, and 19, and the Y.L.T states the false prophet and the others simply burned, and this was all the people in the battle, not from all time and for all eternity. it's a bunch of crap.

The original greek text describing the nativity specifically identifies the "wise men" who came from afar as being Magi, which are Zoroastrian holy men.

As for "eternal hellfire", no one can say what the nature of hell is, since no own has been there. So we can only guess about it's nature. Maybe it is physical pain, maybe not, maybe being eternal means it lies outside of time, maybe it really is eternity. But it is unhelpful to try and use our meagre intellect to try and construct something that we can understand. We can't understand it. We can never. We can only have faith.

The Orthodox view has been that heaven and hell are the same metaphysical location; that one's relation to God determine one's direct experience of God. So if you're like God, then it's a pleasurable experience but if you're not-like God, then it's the opposite. Since God is everywhere, you can't evade Him but you can move either away or closer to Him.

The best analogy, would be a person who has spent his whole life living in a dark room. The minute that he is exposed to bright light, it'll hurt his eyes and cause discomfort. However to a person who is accustomed to light, then the bright light will feel welcome to them.


Thus as Christians, you want to spend a life where the light i.e Truth feels comforting and not discomforting to you.
