Most of that cost is attributed to things like down syndrome, spinal meningitis, etc. All those diseases will be eradicated with eugenics.

Low IQ will also be eliminated in short order. Maybe just 2-3 generations. Since IQ 85 hovers around the sweet spot for criminality, we just won't have those folks anymore. Will there still be crime? Not that far, m8. We already have editing capability on many complex traits (eg. hair color, eye color, height, body mass, etc). That is not science fiction or long term future. It's here now.

Things like IQ are a bit more complicated, but we're getting very close. My estimate is 3-5 years and we will know all the base pairs that correlate to cognitive ability. Then it's just a matter of turning on the "pluses", and turning off the "negatives".

If we get to an avg IQ of say, 125-130, that will change to cognitive makeup of not just the general population, but also the political class.

Now, all of us can probably think about what the low IQ version of us would think about eugenics. We can all imagine what the 12 yo self would think, or maybe the 20 yo self.

However, relatively few can imagine what the 140 IQ version of you would think, or even the 160+ version. My estimation is that much of the malfeasance in the world of politics will change greatly when we can engineer populations with even 100+ average. I'm with you here. It's by no means perfect technology at the moment. However, the funding has been lacking. Right now you can get funding pretty well for work on genetic diseases and such. But for things like, intelligence, the funding is pretty sparse.

I do not universally agree or disagree with this sentiment; I believe the state is valuable in cases involving externalities. For example, education has positive externalities. I agree this is massive. every time I read an article about it I get sick to my stomach. There is other stuff going on too that doesn't even make the press.
