Hi guys, sad story here, but it needs to be told as a warning for others :(

My brother was a nice kid, decent friends, decent looks, etc. He never got into any trouble. But one day, he decided to go to one of those house parties he dreamed about. So he did. There was marijuana at the party. He was pressured into doing it by his "friends". Eventually he gives in and does 1 puff. But his friends didn't think that was enough. They made him smoke the entire marijuana cigarette. By the time they were done with him, he smoked the entire pack.
At this point, he began foaming at the mouth and spasming uncontrolably. His "friends" let him lay there for 10minutes before calling 9-11. When the paramedics arrived, it was too late.
During the Autopsy, they discovered he had 3 times the lethal dosage of THC in his body.
So, if some of your "friends" try to convince you to smoke a marijuana cigarette, just say no - or better yet, take a deep breath, and end your friendship. Trust me, in a few years time, you'll be glad you saved your life, because it has been proven scientifically that Marijuana is a "gateway drug" to other even more dangerous substances. A DEA agent I know even told me that 66,667% of all confiscated marijuana shipments in 2007 were secretely laced with heroin in order to turn reefers into quick addicts.

Former pot smoker. Realized it was ruining my life so I stopped. I have a social work degree and have been conducting drug and alcohol assessments on substance users for close to 2 years now.

Working with addicts and probation departments, you learn things about drugs. The worst effects short-term come from abuse where you don't get sleep and grind your teeth all the time.

Long-term abuse or addiction carry their own problems though, which can be described in relation to the dopamine levels in your brain. I'll use arbitrary numbers to describe them, something that I learned at a conference a while ago.

The feel-good reward system in your brain is stimulated 10 times more than when you orgasm, making it very easy for some to abuse. Problem is, the human brain has never been used to being exposed to that much dopamine, so in an effort to remedy this the brain will either cease or severely limit the amount of dopamine it naturally produces to compensate for the insanely high amounts of dopamine it is exposed to when in a habitual pattern of meth use.

When a meth addict stops using meth, their dopamine levels will crash down to 30 or 40, and their brain will be incapable of getting itself back to normal for the next 10 TO 15 YEARS. This means that the addicted person feels like shit, is depressed, and food, sex, anything no longer gives them pleasure like it used to...but they know what will make them feel better, just one bump and it all goes away. It's horrific, but once they relapse their brains go all the way back to how they were before they stopped. This is the real danger in meth, and moreso an inability to moderate your behavior.

I was not. I would buy weed and sit on my ass all day watching stupid shit on youtube insead of pursuing my interests. It took me a long time to get out of the denial stage and admit I had a problem with weed. I attribute at least some of that to the fact that I believed the bullshit when people say weed isn't addictive. Sure, I wouldn't suck a dick for weed money but I sure as fuck would give thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of my life to an activity that gave me nothing to show for it.

If you have chronic pain, sure weed is good. But I don't recommend using weed to cure other chemical dependency issues. I believe people that can't moderate should keep busy instead of giving themselves opportunities to fall into recreational substance use that will lead them back to relapse. I've smoked weed daily since half way through my senior year in high school.

I really did get consumed in that degenerate stoner culture lifestyle in the beginning. But, to be frank, I grew out of it pretty quickly.

I don't like showing up places all stoned. It makes me anxious and paranoid. Being in social situations isn't fun and it's actually really uncomfortable. Normally, I have mild anxiety in social situations - but being high makes me feel fucking awful and I usually freeze up and don't talk much.

Not too long ago though, I grew out of it. Exercise feels awesome, and sometimes I use pot as a reward for getting my exercise in. But that's just one of many things that's changed.

I like how you talked about deeper thinking and evaluation. I've seen people here and there refer to certain drugs being able to break social engineering, and although they were vague about which particular drugs tend to disrupt engineering, I'm certain pot is one of them. Therefore, I'm excited to see what happens once it gains popularity. Beyond that, I liked your mentioning that because I always feel enlightened when I smoke and thinking becomes a chore no longer, rather it's amusing, enthralling, and exhilarating. People tend to overlook the insightful powers you get when ingesting psychedelics, and I'm privy to the idea that we need to be more open about accepting the good with the bad in them being more popular and easier to access.

Smoke pot if you want. I quit about 15 years ago. I've smoked all kinds of different strains that affected me in all kinds of different ways. The one thing each strain had in common, when I sobered up I felt extremely lazy and had difficulty carrying on a conversation.
