Gardening is the ultimate red pill /pol/, now hear me out I'm not some hippie tree hugging fag who is doing it because of 'muh GMOs' I'm doing because I was interested in what should happen. Since I've started it my grocery bill is going way down as I'm not spending so much money on fresh produce and nothing is more satisfying than literally enjoying the fruits (or veggies) of your labor. And as a bonus you start to develop a small since of self sufficiency.

Gardening is awesome, especially if you've never done it before. It's amazing how shitty grocery store produce really is compared to what I grow myself.

I do mostly berries and fruit atm since my yard is pretty small, but holy crap my strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are delicious.

You'll never want store bought again.

It's not the ultimate one but definetly a pretty good one.
One of my favorite parts in summer is the smell of fresh homegrown tomatoes. Homegrown stuff is usualy more nutritious too because they can finish ripening, veggies you get in shops are picked while they are green, those fill your stomach too but will your body hungry.

>>
Started gardening 3-4 years ago, just in pots at first, Tomatoes etc. But have since set up raised beds in my gardens and can grow a lot of staples like potatoes, carrots and onions. Have got one year so far of mulching my own organic waste so have a good source of compost now, with a second compost bin to use so I can have a constant source.

It's really worthwhile for a multitude of reasons, growing your own food encourages you to cook with fresh vegetables and not only makes you physically healthy but studies have shown gardening and being close to nature is good for mental health too. There is always more to learn with every growing season you can experiment and see what works and what doesn't so with every year you get more productive and efficient. Even if you work a full time job all you need is a weekend and the odd day of maintenance to set something up and nature does the rest.

I have a few raised beds - they're good for keeping doggos out. I would recommend installing a drip system on a timer, it will save you a lot of time watering. No store bought tomato can stand up to a homegrown one, beefsteak tomato + salt + cottage cheese is dessert, and your BLTs will never be better.

Farming your own stuff is great. However, when you began doing it on a large scale (enough to become self-sufficient), you realize it is taking 100% of your time. You can't have a job anymore, you can't fuck your wife or teach life lessons to your children, you can't do anything other than farming, showering, eating, sleeping and farming again.

Got what we call an allotment in the UK- a city food garden in a park.

Thers loads of rabbits,, but you have to simply protect your crops by building raised beds and chicken wiring things up.

Rabits dont seem to like hopping over anything thats over a foot high, even if theres lettuce on top.

Pigeons are a problem with brassicass though.

Fascism has always been very environmentally conscious, to the point where Jews literally consider extreme environmentalism anti-Semitic (I am not even joking about this). If you suggest the government must intervene to preserve the environment, Jews will begin to complain and compare you to the Nazis.

I have different veggies growing. But the system is simplistic as fuck. I have an overhead arm on railings. Two of these arms. Both are sensors and one scans for bugs.

Each of the beds have compartments that have PH readers, and each bed is connected to a tank. The tank premixes fertilizers and nutrients into the water so the PH is always perfect. (Nitro for example has it's own pouch,)

And I'm currently working on a way to automate the harvest. I thought about a robot that goes around picking the fruit from the vined plants. But so far the little fucker's claw keeps ripping the plant up with it.

Depends on where you are, but yes, earlier the better. Here I've started tomatoes and superhot chilies (both not really suited to climate) under artificial lights before last frost. Cuttings can be better than seedstock for yield/consistency but you can still pick up some more interesting varieties than the commercial stuff in the supermarket. Tomatoes tend to grow in vines, but there are some that are adapted to growing in pots. Also the vine ones (traditional) can be grown to hang from baskets, but you'll probably want the pot variety if space is an issue.

Watering is very important in pots because they dry out quicker.

Potatoes can be planted in sacks. Basically as the plant grows, you roll the sack up and lay more soil down. Very space efficient crop.

Hope this helps

It's not impossible, but definitely difficult. With broccoli you have a small window to harvest them and messing in the slighest fucks the whole plant up.

There are some good resources out there for tobacco growing. A ridiculous amount of varieties to choose from. Online tobacco seed sellers usually have links to growers forums.

On an unrelated note, if you're having trouble starting seeds due to age or whatever, a little bit of hydrogen peroxide mixed with water can get them started. My 3 year old onion seeds sprouted with this method.

Here is my little garden. the bucket plants are about 1-2 years old.

I have an aloe plant on the left that was given by a friend for practice as a first plant. I don't really think aloe heals burns, I can't find any proof that it does.

In the same bucket is what I think is kale. It just sprouted without me planting it and it has gotten huge, with leaves as big as my hand.

On the right is a donated pepper plant. It has never given peppers for some reason, but has dark green leaves and white flowers.

In the deep water culture bucket I have 5 1-2 month old radishes and 5 different species that I forget what I planted a few days ago. It has a bubble maker running in it 24/7.

I water the pots once a week and water the deepwater culture when the rockwool cubes get dry.

For fertilizer I use 1/4 teaspoon per 1 liter of water every watering of 1 part urea 1 part potash 2 parts bonemeal by volume.

The lights are x4 "Hydroponic Full Spectrum CFL Grow Light Bulb 60 Watt Bulb 5500K H60" connected to a 4 socket splitter connected to a lantern cord connected to a 12 hour on 12 off timer.

Do you have a balcony porch? If so you can do a lot with clay strawberry pots, a mini trellace with tomatoes and a dwarf apple tree in a pot. Herbs in a window sill pot, etc.

It does not heal burns, it can relive the pain for small ones, but in more serious burns it may actually be decremental by blocking the way of actual cures

You can find shit that is VERY heat and drought tolerant there. Also, look into multi species cover cropping. If you pick the right combo, it will survive the heat and dry, and it will help build soil organic material. More soil organic material and soil biology means greater water holding capacity of the soil, and also makes it so that the plants can function in dryer soil than when the soil is poor.
>>
>>135901012
Our food distribution system ensures that fresh high quality stuff goes in cans or frozen bags while the picked a little too early bred to look good but not taste so good craps ends up on the shelves. Not that you CAN'T find good fruit in the store but it's usually limited, seasonal as hell, and organic (just because organics have shorter shelf life's and are picked fresh versus sprayed with wax and stuff).

Buying local and coop is still your best choice. Or just garden.

Maybe some of the more tropical cultivars of peppers, but that's a negatory with the cultivars that I grow. I've had them lose their leaves due to a light late frost, and then had them regrow leaves and go on to produce all season. I've also had them continue to produce, albeit very slowly, when it is getting down to the mid thirties late in the season.

Gardening is passive income.
After your initial investment you may need to setup a rabbit forcefield.
Fertiizer is system upgrades to increase your passive income.
Systems that dont see 6 hours of sunlight will have a problem.

If someone jumps deer class supers into your garden you will need to erect a tall fence cyno inhib.

Look into regenerative agriculture, anon. Modern agriculture is the biggest environmental disaster on the planet, IMO. It's a matter of realizing that there are more cycles than just the seasons, that we are a part of nature, and accepting our role as the apex predator.
>>
>>135921741
I am well aware of the problems humanity will face in the next time. That is why I proposed to get many children. The societies of the world will not stop by their own. There will be massive food shortageses and out of that resulting wars, but that is exactly why there need to survive some people who can do it better after that instead of just going full r-strategy again.

Here's a successful farmer who uses very little in the way of synthetic inputs:

If you go and look at a lot of Lawton's other stuff, you'll see that he's following the principles that Brown uses, but in a radically different way. They still work. Even the Chinks are getting in on the action:

I'll be trying two new things this year and next:

This year, three beds are going to be set aside for a "special" cover crop. It normally stays warm enough to not kill lettuce, and it always stays warm enough to not kill things like beets and spinach. I'm going to do a lettuce/spinach/chard/kale cover crop, and I'm also going to include short day onions and sugar beets. And probably something like hairy vetch as a legume. That way, I'll get the benefits of a cover crop while getting fresh salad greens all winter, and sugar beets and onions in the spring.

The second thing is, next spring, I'm going to plant a 3-6 beds (I have 5000 ft^2 of garden space,) as a chaos garden. I'm going to take every (annual) flower, vegetable, edible legume and fruit species that I can get my grubby hands on, mix it all up, plant it all without regard to spacing or what is next to what. It's not something that would be practical for commercial production, but it should attract beneficial insects like crazy, help soil health in the long run, and be a helluva lot of fun.

What about in a small apartment with no balcony?

That sounds pretty cool. There's tons of great cheap DIY stuff online for year round gardening, I'm moving soon so I can't wait to get a permanent setup.
Right now I have 3 kinds of tomatoes, corn, 2 kinds of pumpkins, peas, bell peppers, jalepenos, brussel sprouts, carrots, beets, kale, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, and various herbs pretty much all just on my porch and alongside my house. I'm growing a lot of things vertically and have them in various stages from seedling to almost ready to harvest. That way by the time the current stuff is harvested the next batch won't be far behind. And since I have everything in the next rotation in buckets and pots, I'll be able to bring them along with me when I move and get a greenhouse set up.

Puerto Rico has an excellent climate for peppers. I've been growing sweet potatoes, which are definitely the most effective food crop. Plant six plants, wait 4 months, harvest 5 gal bucket full of concentrated calories. Just know that once you plant sweet potatoes, they will establish dominion in your garden, and are impossible to eliminate completely.

Look into chickens as well anons. They're relatively cheap and easy to care for. They're also good for the garden. Droppings, eating bugs, etc. Plus they only require a few sq feet per chicken and the eggs have many uses. Eggshells are good for calcium in your soil and keeping slugs and things away.

It looks like the scarlet runner beans are getting ready to bloom, and they've stayed blooming well into the fall in the past. Hopefully I didn't get my klip dagga in too late for flowering in the early fall too. Next year, I'm going to add more flowering plants to the mix.

Guinea fowl are better though. They
1) strategically target garden pests without scratching everywhere
2) travel in gangs making their pest control effective
3) have darker, richer meat.
Egg harvesting is harder with them though since they don't like getting cooped up.

I am not talking about beehives. I am talking about a home for mason bees. Those solitary bees require small tubes to lay their eggs in and they are virtiusly impossible to get to sting you

How would you best preserve crops once they've been harvested anons? Say I got a bumper harvest of spuds, carrots, broccoli, whatever. Surely putting it in the freezer will just turn it to mush, and I don't have any liquid nitrogen around the place to flash-freeze it and stop the ice crystals from damaging the cells.
