It was a ridiculously inefficient system which relied on the constant supply of new raw materials and slave labor pillaged from conquered lands, hence the obvious decline in living standards once communism stopped expanding. The desperation the government had to assimilate places like Afghanistan and Chechnya came from this obvious fact.

Russia and its satellite states have been thoroughly plundered by central planning and this is why socialism is incapable of reemerging there, probably ever again. It's clear that most people want this only to relive the heavily circumstantial "glory days" that Russia temporarily experienced as a real world power, which was largely more as a consequence of WWII giving them an excuse to invade and despoil countless other countries. In truth, the Soviet Union would likely have collapsed in the early 1950s if not for its imperial activites.

Modern Russia is a country that completely lacks ideology. It looks into the past instead of the future. The USSR on the other hand was aimed at the future - "global communism" and all that bullshit. Many wish they had something to look forward to.

Considering the rapid industrialization and economic prosperity enjoyed by the USSR under a planned economy, and the contrasting economic failure of the country after the reinstitution of private industry and capitalism, I can totally see why.

I was in Russia for 2 weeks recently. I talked with my many people in my family from villagers, small city folk, and Moscow residents. They saw the USSR as a necessary sacrifice for the things they have today and are now embracing capitalism and consumerism happily. They have never seen so many grocery stores stocked with food, or had the ability to buy good cars so easily. My parents left when the collapse happened, they have so many horror stories about the times of anarchy and uncertainty.

USSR was fascist, not communist, and fascism is the best ideology man has invented so far, so I can understand why they'd want it back. America needs to go fascist as well.
