Why do people like these books? They are full of presentistic characters. The psychology of characters and their development is mediocre. The writing style is stale and uninteresting. It is your garden variety bland fantasy novel. The wheel of time series is better and I am not even a fan of them. Read the ancient myths, or Tolkien. Ursula Le guin's fantasy novel is pretty awesome. Forgot the name, but it is good. The old Conan series is great, and actually contain more depth than the modern stuff. He used the theosophical mythos as an aide in his stories which does add a lot of mystery and depth.

Anyways lame show and lame book. This guy is overrated.

The Drowned God is basically Cthulhu, the thing animating White Walkers and that fire god the Red Priests worship are probably Old Ones as well; I don't have the chart in front of me showing which ones they map to. Magic and dragons are returning to the world, and it had the potential to be crazy-awesome high fantasy.

In practice, all that gets relegated to the background in favor of drama, sex, torture porn, and more drama. It's like he created the most batshit crazy fantasy setting short of Golarion, but then excised every supernatural element and replaced them with mundane tits and gore to appeal to normies.

I remember this shit in the Hunger Games as well. Books are written in a super simple way, like some 5th grade English reading exercise. Everything moves at a quick pace then suddenly the author spends 3 pages on describing made up food items with all these complicated adjectives that I never heard of and are not used outside of these sequences.
The Redwall books had the same problem when I was a kid.

That has shifted a bit as more books came out. Books 1-3 were out when I started reading it. Those books, in particular the 2nd one, were considered must read for contemporary fantasy. The book four came out and big cracks started to show. Martin said that book was only half a book because his manuscript got too long and he decided to divide it in to two. Then book 5 came out, or book 4 part 2, and existing problems were not solved, more problems added. So around book 5 release, general opinion was breddy gud not amazing. And then the tv thing started.
