I was messing around earlier when an idea occurred to me. The governement should place a 5% flat tax to help pay off the national debt.

I did the math against the gdp, and it would be 900 billion each year.

Would this be a good thing? What is /pol/'s opinion of my idea? I know it's not well thought out to use the gdp only as a guideline for the math, but it seems the easiest way to do it.

The tax would only be used to directly pay off the debt.
