The purpose of the criminal justice system in my opinion is to remove dangerous elements from society.
It isn't about punishment, it isn't about revenge or rehabilitation, it should be as clinical as excising a tumor.
People are in prison so that they can't repeat their crimes, they're incarcerated because they broke the social contract and they can no longer be trusted not to hurt people, if you commit a crime serious enough to be executed then you forfeit your right to life and you should be immediately removed.

We know that hard criminals don't get 'rehabilitated', they can't even live in prison that gives them every opportunity to change their behavior without creating a microcosm of crime and violence, the drug dealers will still deal drugs and the violent offenders will still assault people.
We see minor success with rehabilitation in joke prisons in places like the Nordic countries, but again that misses the point.

I think the US justice system is wasteful and for the most part doesn't accomplish its goals, if somebody repeatedly and consistently shows that they aren't capable of living in our society, then guess what, you don't get to live in our society. They aren't valuable, they don't produce or contribute anything to society, they're a drain on resources and they aren't even grateful for the opportunities that are presented to them. There are absurd amounts of programs both in and outside prison to find these people training and work, we have fucking rapists and bank robbers making fucking macaroni pictures on the tax payer's dime.

I would implement a three strike system for violent or especially dangerous crimes, if you squander those opportunities for rehab and reintegration into society three times, then you get fucking mulched because you aren't worth the effort.
