Depends what you're going for. There are nice areas up North which are very affordable (UK house prices are insane). If you've got money- Surrey, Kent, Sussex, bits of Essex.

Avoid London. It's unaffordable to live in unless you want to live in one of the shit areas full of recent third world immigrants. And even then it's expensive. The only people who live in London are people who are from there originally and won't move, immigrants and people who need to live there for work. Everyone else just takes a train in.

The free channels (BBC) are what you're paying for with the TV license. They force you to pay for those channels in order to be able to get the rest, it's how public tv is funded. No TV ads though, which is why there's a fee. It's retarded though and will eventually be scrapped.

It's chicken pieces served in a thick sauce made from almonds, cashews, coconut and coconut milk, cooked into a "curry gravy" made from onions, tomatoes, etc. It's basically chicken in a creamy savoury coconut sauce, served hot with rice and a side of naan bread (air-filled semi-sweet flatbread, often seasoned with garlic and herbs).

It goes back basically to the end of the 19th century. At this point, atheism was already becoming increasingly common in the urban upper classes throughout Europe - even among high ranking churchmen - but it was still largely kept private. The Anglican church - along with many churches in Europe - suffered a major blow to their moral authority in the first world war, because they shilled HEAVILY for war - even painting it as a holy crusade in many cases. This led to many losing their faith, but church attendance remained high because (a) it was a focal point of the largely homogenous, mostly rural communities that made up most of the country's population and (b) during both world wars the country was still animated by a common purpose that made people stick with the formula of traditions, even if they didn't necessarily believe in them (which as mentioned already in this thread is a major failing of us Bongs).

The precipitous decline from post-WW2 onwards is an outgrowth of what happened earlier in the century. First of all, you had mass dirsuption of traditional communities following the bombing of major population centres, leading many to abandon the places and people they'd grown up with. Secondly, you had a generation coming up (the Boomers) who'd been raised by people who had lost all faith in traditional institutions, and who also moved away from their traditional communities en-masse. Thirdly, any remaining moral authority the establishment had was finally and irrevocably destroyed in scandals like the Profumo affair, which exposed the habits of the upper orders to the public on a large scale for the first time. At that pont, the church largely stopped even trying to assert moral principles (because the game was up, and most of its leadership didn't hold to those principles anyway.)
