I was chewing on this last night. Like the weakness of atheism, individualism has compromised the connectivity men shared to build culture. We agree on nothing save for what makes us happy. And our economy requires personal dedication and sacrifice to achieve any of it, placing us in direct competition with our neighbors.

It's worse than narcissism, because the best achievers become those willing to give up or abuse connections. The backlash then becomes nihilism among the less passionate and collectivist/tribalist garbage that only fosters further competition and animosity.

We don't lack a culture in the US. We're an empire; our culture has dominated most of the planet. But it consumes. Resources, people, ideals. Until all we have left is trinkets and entertainment to distract us from the utter lack of common cause and connectivity that for thousands of years kept us from murdering each other. We have a system that works. It just doesn't work very well. And now that the machine is failing we aren't addressing the weakness, governments and businesses are investing in fresh pools of humanity not jaded by exposure and willing to try their hand at the game of fuck you I'll get mine.
